But we've had exactly the same visual look now for BBC News for over 9 years now.

It hasn't, apart from all the minor changes I've that time they moved to a new building with totally new studios about 5 years ago. If that wasn't a change of 'visual look' I don't know what is

The studio change, and the shortening of the title sequence was it though really. The Lower Thirds didn't change, the basic title card didn't change. I don't think of it as a change of visual look, which relates to the graphics only. They changed studio and location, and that was it. Everything else feels exactly the same as it did 9 years ago in Television Centre.

You know, I had forgotten the change, which in a sense makes my own point as well. Nothing about the lower thirds in that time was memorable enough to stand out, and even to the level of not remembering the change, which was actually only down to different software in the new location.

A graphical refresh is definitely needed.

On a side note, it will be interesting if and when they decide to revamp the sets in the studios, especially in Studio E, how different it will actually look with that newsroom backdrop. Because right now, I get the sense that the only way they could really make it look any different would be to block it out entirely.

No it wasn't

Indeed, for a while didn't the overnight simulcasts do some clever thing where the tickers, straps etc all carried the same text, but the NC got the old graphics and World got the new ones?

Yes, if they wanted them to stay exactly the same then they could have. However a lot of the graphical style of the news did seem different too, presumably because it was done on the latest design software and of course in HD

It's not only the studios and 'lower thirds' that changed in the move to BH, the top of the hour countdown was completely new as well and a lot of minor changes. But then that happens over time too, things evolve. I'm sure that there's a lot of subtle differences between BBC news in 2010 and 2017 that no one even realised

Regarding the BBC News brand, I always prefer evolution rather than revolution, especially when BBC News has such a strong identity. So whilst I would like to see updates and a refresh, I wouldn't like a complete change.

I still prefer the look from 2003-2008 though.

I think the red globe and beeps should remain a part of the core identity of BBC News. Something that Sky News now has no identifying brand parts, because they stripped away the music mostly, the globe and the red and blue colour scheme.

They did re-do the titles also, but it was a basic re-colour, re-render, and some smaller tweaks.

Should a newschannel really show a graphic saying 'the news will follow shortly'.

They are simulcasting the Athletics for no particular reason again then I presume?

Yes, either it is news and therefore doesn't require the graphic or it isn't news and should not be on the channel.
