What do you mean by “actor”?

Talk Radio is nipping at the heels of LBC Radio for listeners. Even though I am not a fan of their political slant at Talk Radio, I do like their presentation style.

Both LBC and Talk Radio are right wing stations, so they are basically after the same custom. (and please don't mention that actor James O'B.)

Nonsense - whilst TalkRADIO is definitely for more right-leaning listeners, LBC has a bit more of a balance between right and left presenters. I’d hardly call James OB, Maajid Nawaz, Shelagh Fogarty and Eddie Mair right-wing.

Nice to hear Sandy Warr back on LBC News this morning - she was the first drivetime presenter at the 2003 Chrysalis relaunch, as well as having been on both LBC and News Direct before that.

Until recently she was the morning newsreader on TalkRadio.

She also read the news on Bauer stations last weekend.

I used to enjoy the early breakfast show she did with Chris Ashley on the original Talk Radio

Steve Allen, Nick Ferrari, Iain Dale, Tom Snorebrick, Andrew Castle, Matt Frei, Clive Bull, that Johnson woman..... there is no one openly left wing on the station at all. And this was the station that employed Nigel Farage AND Katie Hopkins.

That he puts it all on for effect. He really doesn't believe anything he says.

James O'Brien?

Although I'd say pro-truth rather then left wing.

It is quite usual for a talk radio presenter to put across an idea they don't agree with or play devil's advocate just for the sake of the programme. The same with any one who's employed to be opinionated. You can't have an opinion on everything and it's not good radio if everyone phones up to agree with you. Tommy Boyd on the original Talk Radio was a master of this, starting every hour with an over the top original and usually controversial idea which people would phone in to argue against.

I really don't see what you're getting at with James O Brien though, I can't see what makes you think it's all an act, and I've listened to him on and off (mostly the mystery hour) for many years. If he really is a leave supporting libertarian conservative then he's a bloody good actor.

His unique selling point, his schtick, the thing that has got him the most attention and provides him the most attention via viral videos is just him asking the right questions of his callers.

If someone calls in and gives their opinion on something he disagrees with he doesn't just put the contrary position, he asks why the caller thinks that. The resulting conversation usually ends up being more about the logic of the opinion than the actual opinion, and it normally falls apart.

The other aspect to this is that some people, normally those of a certain persuasion believe that the callers that undergo the above treatment are all fake. They then ring in because they think they as a real person would easily be able to 'win' an argument with him..... and they end up the star of LBC's next viral video

James O’Brien is a brilliant broadcaster. I think he challenges the extremes rather than necessarily pushing a left opinion - he does a great job of letting guests tie themselves in knots by asking them to justify their opinions. It’s a refreshing change to the anger and conflict other shows engage in.

Going back to LBC News, I'm curious as to the reasoning for shutting down the separate site. Are Global somehow unhappy with the station's performance and wanting to wind it down, or are they just trying to get listeners from both stations to give the other a try?

Essentially you’ve just proved my point - there’s more of a balance on LBC than TalkRADIO (a vast amount of LBC’s weekday flagship slots have presenters who sway to the left). The two can’t really be called the same in terms of political leanings.
