Maybe they should cater to the US a little more by covering the map in random neon colours and branding that section as “ZOMG AMERICA’S WEATHER CENTER” so they can understand it a little better.

What they need to do, is either get rid of the forecast for Jersey and the Orkney/Shetland Isles, or stick them in a box in the top right corner somewhere. Then they could enlarge the map and make it more user-friendly.

That's fine on a static map with weather symbols, but not when you are showing patterns of weather moving. It would be better if they reverted to the view they used before, rather than the flat Mercator image.

I've never cared much for the BBC's weather graphics. They seem rather dull and monochromatic and don't really make the weather come alive.

Compare them with the more interesting, yet elegant graphics used by France 2:

LOL. Must be something you saw on Black Mirror. Weather is taken far more seriously in North America, because people can and do die as a result of it. So rather than being vague, it needs to be far more specific, precise and exact. ZOMG?

People die everywhere 'because of weather' (or lack of it, Cape Town is about to run dry for example) but the US probably has one of the lowest weather related death rates in the world ?

True. However we have frequent dangerous weather conditions. Tornadoes pop up every spring across the midwest, frequent snow (often in large accumulations) in the northeast, and the threat of hurricanes up and down the entire eastern seaboard.

Also, people in the US tend to get their weather information from the television rather than radio. Radio forecasts here are quick and to the point (often done by TV meteorologists) while the TV ones are much longer and detailed.

I remember the humorist Bill Bryson, who was born in the U.S. but now lives in the U.K., writing how uneventful and gentle weather in Britain, or at least England, tends to be: “To an outsider, the most striking thing about the English weather is that there is not very much of it."

He clipped a newspaper forecast that simply said "Warm and dry, with cooler and rainy spells"; he kept it because it was accurate for pretty much any day.

Overall, I'm liking the new look BBC weather.

I think the solid name tags and the map looking stretched due to the projection and the big gap at the top because of Shetland are the two main problems with the new look.

It's a lot more useful to be able to see the surrounding context. The local report, zoomed right into the islands, is a bit of a joke. Without being able to see what's coming it just sort of flickers from rain to cloud to sun and back again.

We pay our Doctor Who tax same as everyone else. Not our fault we're geographically remote!

Because the weather reporting is so good, of course. And does getting shot as a looter after a hurricane count as weather-related? Wink

Cos I'm sure the 2005-2018 maps didn't always show the Channel Islands. Occasionally, the map would flyover the channel islands as it went on its tour of the UK, but it didn't always flyover Jersey.

I would put Jersey and Shetland/Orkney Isles into 2 separate boxes in the corner, and just put on an old style BBC weather symbol on there to let people know what's going to happen in these area. And let everyone else have a zoomed in map.

Yeah, it's not as if weather affects them much, what with their reliance on lifeline ferries and flights and whatnot...
Glad you're not in charge.
