Lovely touch to have the original theme playing out there!

It sounded brilliant considering it came from the 50-year old original 1/4" reel to reel master tape! Hasn't aged at all! Smile

Did they play it live from the tape or transfer it to something digital? If they played it from the tape it's good to know they still have people around with the long lost skill of backtiming tape!

No, it was a digitial transfer - played out from SpotOn. However, some of the sound team at ITN have worked there since the 80s, so I'm sure they could do it if needed!

Wow, what dreadful white balance in that wide shot of Julie and Sir Trev.

It doesn't show in that upload but that wide shot was 25p whereas some of the other shots in the same interview were 50i. Odd decision.

I've seen that sort of style in some interviews before, it always looks odd.

I wonder has someone made a more recent edit of "The awakening" for such purposes? (Or just used a Journey back to Oz DVD 😉) https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journey_Back_to_Oz

If I remember correctly, a remaster was done sometime in the noughties, from which opening and closing edits were redone as well. An edit was also done for release that appeared in a library release in 2009, and a commercial version of that album, which I think can still be downloaded on iTunes.

Takes a bit of time to get going but it does pop up.

There may well have been remasters at some point, but last night's version definitely came off ITN's original master tape.

It can be heard from 7:10. This film started production in 1962 but was only released in 1972 in the UK. I'm sure cinema-goers ears would have pricked up at the time given that News at Ten was already 5 years old at this point.

Meanwhile hark back 5 years to 2012 and this was the last time the old theme was played out, on the day of the death of Alistair Burnet.
