'a new logo for a digital age' Rolling Eyes

I love the current one. It's iconic, but with Liberty Global coming in, it's days we're numbered. Stamping your ownership of the sport and all that.

I can see the F and the 1, I can see two right hand bends, and I can also see the droop of the nose of a modern F1 car. I also see an unelegant, blocky design that looks like a mock concept that looks 3/4 finished.

The problem with the current F1 logo is that it looks good on printed media but it suffers like the BBC slanted coloured underline logo from a few years ago.

The right hand side 'saw tooth' speed and movement device is lost on broadcast graphics when shrunk (Sky Sports F1 DOG for example).
I guess there's no chance of that with this one.

Hope FOM don't fiddle with the broadcast race graphics redesign too much. The current flat set are some of the nicest since those horrid quarter screen high grey ones we had to put up with for years.

Honestly, the only issue I have with the logo is the wordmark - very mid-00's tech company.

The current/old logo was great making use of negative space. Nothing really wrong with it, but being at small sizes the spikes didn’t scale well.

But anyway new owners are bound to put their own mark on it. It’s not the version I would have chosen from the three concepts they had, the middle version which sought of resembled a track was ok.

There’s also the image below with the full text, of which I’m not a fan (that ‘e’ and ‘a’ ugh)

It’s not great.

But the current one didn’t last 31 years. Sky’s article says 1987, but I don’t recall seeing it until the late 1990s.

Am I the only one that remembers the old 1990s logo?

Quatorzine Neko, DE88 and bkman1990 gave kudos

Prefer the first one here though probably wouldn't be great as an icon

F1's Youtube channel already has the new logo up with the text in red on the white background.

Also. I didn't know that the old logo was up since early 2000. Is this bit of Sky's article right.

The new logo replaces the iconic 'flying one' design which was first adopted in 1987 and marks one of the most visible changes since Liberty Media became the commercial rights holders of the sport a year ago.

As for the old logo, the FIA made up of the cars and wheels certainly has been around since 1987. Flying 1---- will have to dig a bit deeper to find that but it was first used on the Season Review VHS in 1996, Damon's year.

The new logo worries me. Have they not studied the appalling mess of the European Qualifiers UEFA red graphics set. Red doesn't work. It's pallette compromises too easily. It also can't be nuanced well on video. A mess in the making.

They've sacrificed an iconic piece of logo design for a 70s throwback that isn't a patch on what it replaces. Utterly stupid.

It was this one that was introduced in 1987, not the one they just replaced. That's from the mid 90s.

So it seems Sky just confused the date of introduction of the original logo with the second one.

Edit: A bit of googling, though and it appears that the Flying 1 first made an appearance in 1994 but that the 1987 logo continued to be used in tandem with it, at least as late as 1999.

From a quick glance, the F1 'flying 1' logo was first used as a print graphic on the podium in the 1994 season.
