I can't say I was a particularly big fan of this set. The idents look like the end of a promo to me, especially in this video where the programme board forms and then leaves because they're not being used. Which as mentioned earlier was most of the time as they gave up putting clips in the idents pretty early on so they were left with this redundant bit of ident within an ident!

Also I really never understood why they split the ITV logo into blocks. Very BBC and didn't really add anything to the brand.

Yes! I was going to say that, there was already a broadcaster using a logo with blocks, quite a famous one too.

I didn't much care for these idents either. As you say, the intention was to include promos within them but they stopped bothering with those after five minutes, so you just ended up with it boringly animating onto the screen - much like how in the hearts era, the films were swiftly abandoned in favour of the dull static set. And when they did special ITV1 idents for things like the Champions League Final, they looked nothing like the original set and were just like the old Sky One "special idents" that were just the logo slapped over a scene from the programme.

One of the other things about ITV Day is that it was supposed to be this big rebranding of the daytime output but it started with repeats of Trisha as she'd just abruptly defected.

I still have some nostalgia over this logo and presentation but I definitely think it worked best when it was just ITVs 1 and 2. A rebrand really was necessary when 4 launched, and that logo would have done it no favours (though I'm also biased as I loved the teal logo and numeral 4 they launched with - I still think the teal worked better than the grey they have now).

It's odd that they didn't have a version of those idents that didn't include the promo board formation. Would've cost them nothing to have a slightly different animation in their arsenal. They must've been pretty confident that the promos would be used all the time.

The hearts era static set of idents was a miserable look for the channel (though I liked the other elements of pres). Really boring without the short films which I thought looked quite good.

I'm more amazed we've made it to page 4 without someone mentioning the very risqué 'Sister Channels' promo, which I believe BDA made as their Promax competition submission off the back of doing this package for ITV1/ITV2 as they'd pushed the rebrand as heavily cross promotional. Long since gone from any official sources, but handily TIG Andrew does still have it saved. Just be warned if you've not already seen it, it is definitely not safe for work, with strong sexual references and language that may offend some viewers from the outset.

That's more creative than most of what ITV was airing at the time.

There were some decent 'special' idents that era.

Also courtesy of TIG but I don't remember this ITV Sport sting at all which was used in 2005.

Not related to this package, but this was the ITV Sport ident from 2002, nothing unusual about this, right?

Then, here's that same ident from a year later when they had to rebrand yet again, just lazily put the "blue squares" animation over the ident!

We can narrow that down to the final couple of months before the rebrand too, as it has an ITV4 DOG on screen. Must've been very shortlived, since the change of ITV logo obviously necessitated it's replacement.

I think it was flawed, the arrangement of the logo put the emphasis on '1' rather than 'ITV'; not unlike the short-lived BBC America 'target' logo, it minimised the part people actually identified.

That said, I thought the package was good, it was a shame the integrated menus were ditched so early on as without them there were almost nothing to see.

The overall ITV logo package was a nightmare though, and both replacements have been better than what came before them.
