I remember being fascinated by the technology behind it - my Dad would tell me that in the past they just had a camera pointed at a paper output from a Telex(?) printer, seemed ridiculous to me even as a 7 year old.
Doesn't seem that ridiculous really, seems like a fairly logical way to do it in the days before you could do it electronically.
Yeah, sorry I shouldn't have used the word 'even' - it is indeed logical but was rather taken for granted by me that such things could just be done electronically.
I had the same reaction when I found an old recording of the weather featuring a presenter moving between physical maps, and much later when I realised that older automatic lifts didn't/don't rely on silicon at all.
