Just in case you haven't mastered the EPG, lost your Radio Times or the cat has eaten the newspaper - the BBC will be reminding you of what's coming 'NEXT' with a little on screen 'pop up' on ONE and TWO.

You can catch the first sighting this weekend!

Let's hope everyone complains (which I'm sure they will with reaction on Digitalspy & the BBC POV forum) and it goes the same way as the one on UK Gold (which vanished after less than a year), or at least ITV where compalints to the ITC banished it to saturday evenings.

I've already comaplined before it's even introduced- to 4 diffrent addresses so at least someone relevant will read it. Though I'm certinally expecint a BIG negative reaction to this.

They just don't know what to be doing next, do they (excuse the pun).

Close down the marketing departments - they are ruining BBC pres.

Yes, disrupting my viewing at a crucial moment, with information I could find out elsewhere easily. And no doubtit willbeattention grabbing, which ruins your enjoyment and concentration of a programme more than anything. I personallyconsider the one on ITV2 too attention grabbing.

I'm not too bothered about this, but on ITV it does ruin a few things like Who Wants to be a Millionaire for example. Instead of having to wait for the klaxon saying the show is over, it just says "COMING NEXT" which just ruins it.

Overall though i'm not really bothered, but i think anything on-screen which shouldn't be there is just annoying.

This will happen in some form or another on every channel. It's an effective trick for retaining the audience before they consider where they were going to view next. It's worked on me before if I'm being honest - and that's the only way to approach the question of whether it is successful or not. Whether I like it, is entirely irrelevant.

I don't know how well it works on every channel. As I said UK gold dropped theirs after less than a year, so they obviously didn't see it as that important. I personally see it as unececerry seeing as everyone I know with digital uses the EPG to channel surf, meaning that they will see what's next on the channel they're watcing anyway (on NTL we use the now/next banner)- and get a synopsis if they want. Much more useful than on-screen messages. In the age of EPGs there really is little need for it. The amount of extra viewers they will gain is minimal.

It's something which realistically can only have a 50/50 success rate, rather like ECPs. If someone is watching a programme and a message appeared on screen saying "Next: Emmerdale", and that person absolutely hates Emmerdale, that viewer is automatically lost.

The fact we have OSNs at all shows branding has reached the point where it's having an effect on the programmes themselves. Perhaps broadcasters should accept the inevitable - that people WILL switch over whatever their efforts, rather than insulting the viewers' intelligence.
