I noticed that before eastenders tonight, they relayed the acrobat ident on the giant screen outside buck palace, and then when eastenders came on, the crowds went mad.....did the queen approve of such a thing being shown outside her home???

Suppose it kept the crowds happy, you could even here it on the sky news OB!

They ended EastEnders in the same way - with the end cap in the screen at the front of the palace, and then with no pres junction mixed through to David Dimbleby. Very nicely done - the Beeb is doing what it does best.

I do like it when BBC One decides to anchor the channel from a location, with a decent anchor, rather than using impersonal presentation idents.

Historically they have used this on state occasions - and it really works as a nice change!

How was it actually done? I mean, who or what controlled the actual presentation and the presentation on the giant screen? I presume Presentation controlled what was on actual television, but how was the programme and ident played out via the giant screen?

It was excellent! I really enjoyed the way the done it, very professional indeed!!

I thought that was pretty wicked - do you think the crowd could hear Dimbleby doing the continuity? It was very slick.

But you're right, the crowd did go absolutely berserk! I kept wondering what it would have been like watching that episode within the party atmosphere of the crowd. It must have been kind of odd, especially scenes like janine lying there out of it.

Could have been done in a couple of ways.

The screens that were in shot are almost certainly fed from one of the BBC OB scanners (OB trucks) rather than just showing BBC One off-air. The BBC OB could either have their own copy of the ident (and the EastEnders end caption) which they played in - with pres cutting to the OB instead of the ident / cutting off the end of EastEnders early. Alternatively Pres could have arranged a clean feed of the ident / EastEnders end cap to be fed to the OB.

Either way it's pretty simple - Pres and the OB just have to work together, and agree who does what!

In years past, during Wimbledon, both BBC One and Two Pres (including News, Weather etc.) has been done by the OB - with News and Weather fed to Wimbledon from TVC, and then fed back as part of the Network - pres effectively only had to be on standby for breakdowns?

When The BIG Breakfast used to go to people's houses to wake them up and maybe do a game with them, they could put the newsreader on their television when they went to the news. So, instead of receiving the on air Channel 4 output, the house at the Outside Broadcast would get a full picture of Jasmine Lowson, just like they could at Lock Keepers Cottages.

It's a bit like the Beeb have done today. I've always wondered how they did that.

Well that is a bit different - the Beeb used to do the same thing on the Noel's House Party NTV segments. They retuned BBC One (or in BB case C4) to a different frequency so that they had control over the telly. It required access to the persons house though... These things are normally set up...

That doesn't happen, when it's time to go to the news presentation cuts to the news and weather, when Wimbledon have finished their bit.

There is too much to go wrong in the news or weather going back 7 forth and theOB can't rehearse the next bit.

Yes, with the BB, they would surprise the people, go to another feature, and then return to the person's house with everything set up and the TV tuned in.

Oh damn did they? I turned across from BBC1 to Sky News Active during the end credits to see if I could catch the reaction of the crowd to the ending.

There's a huge schedule of shows on the big screens, most of which I gather are staying there till Thursday.
