RTE News - Ireland

rdd posted:
That's likely the end of his Irish television career so, RTÉ tends to have a "You'll Never Work In This Town Again" attitude towards any of its stars that defect to the commercial sector - it took Marty Whelan literally years to be rehabilitated after the collapse of Century. (Although Ray D'Arcy somehow seems to be able to work for both). I don't think he's likely to show up on TV3 either, at least not in a permanent capacity, while Vincent Browne remains with them.

They've left that attitude behind somewhat probably because of Marty. He had to go on the dole for a while and was blacklisted for a year or two before he was left back on the airwaves. He was really the first RTE star to go elsewhere and was used as an example. It was more than a bit harsh. However, in this multi channel internet world people on Commercial radio regularly work for RTE.

However, Pat is different. I wouldn't be surprised if you don't see him on RTE for at least a year or two. Again used as an example of how cold it can be outside of Montrose.

It'll also be a lesson for other RTE celebs when the listening figures are updated in 6 and 12 months time. Some listeners will follow Pat, but I doubt if the RTE Radio One listener-ship figures will go down that much. Those that listen to RTE Radio 1 are generally set in their ways and are unlikely to move up the dial.

RTE News - Ireland

Some slight presentational changes for RTE News. RTE News: One O'Clock, does not start with headlines, but goes straight into title sequence, then into single shot of newscaster, rather than wide shot of studio. The bulletin also seems to be a little shorter, 15 minutes, where previously it had been about 20 minutes.

Also, I notice that the Six One today is 30 minutes long, not the usual hour. Not sure why they shorten the Six One at around this time every year.

This is normal for RTE and has little to do with money, even when they had loads of cash they still shortened news bulletins During August. Luckily it's not 20 years ago when the lunchtime News was reduced to headlines from June till the last week in September and the Six-One was also cut back as well.

It would have more to do with Holidays rather than money. RTE used to have only 3 or 4 hours of home produced programmes a week from April to September. (excluding news and sports) The schedule was filled up with American imports mostly.

Staff were either off filming or more often off on Holiday. On RTE Radio the likes of Pat Kenny and Gay Byrne would disappear for 3 months. This has all changed in recent years but there's still an attitude that no one watches TV during the summer.
