Surprising when Huw promised that they would do just that.
They've recorded it and played it straight after the interview finished.
Neither BBC or ITV cutting in to show the Obama statement. Surprising move not to cut in Sky are showing it live.

BBC Look East announced on Twitter that their local news should be coming up at around 23:00.
I wonder if we will still get a comprehensive round up of the other two big news stories today.
It does show the fickle nature of news. A massive story with hours of coverage is now suddenly off the agenda altogether.
Are we going to get the regional news which may have been extended anyway?

When the Queen Mother died, they used a static caption. What they should do is use either a plain 'News Report' slide, or a clock again.
The use of the kites ident on BBC1, with it's upbeat soundtrack, was not at all appropriate, to lead into such a solemn news event. Once again, the current lack of any BBC1 ident with sufficient gravitas for serious news events, is very evident.

BBC Look East tweetin expecting Local news at 11 but still not sure
Could they not do local news at normal time then return to National - such important local news tonight for some.

A return of the 'News Report' slide would be suitable IMO. I can't find the specific image but IIRC during the balloon era they used this slide with the 'News Report' caption instead of the apology message:

They just don't help themselves do they. They've done well recent and actually been recognised for things like their coverage of the Jubilee and the birth of Prince George (even getting a rare ratings victory over the BBC with that), but then they go and let themselves down when a story such as this breaks and they're back to square one.
ITV should have dropped that ad break. Very poor taste from them.

There's always been speculation that the Moon ident would come into play at times like this - I suspect if it does return because of news like this it will be tonight, although I suspect that if it is going to appear that the reason it didn't earlier was because it was very sudden and a quick move to simulcast WN.

Maybe important locally, but nothing tops this story tonight, absolutely nothing.

Given news about Nelson Mandela - http://t.co/w4naaBHJer - we're still awaiting confirmation on if/when #bbcqt may air. Currently unlikely.

Yes - the standard Now/Next graphic with just the words "News Report" would suffice - or even without them. Even fading to black with or without an announcement and cutting straight to BBC News would be fine - though I don't think joining the press conference cold was the best way to break the news.
