BBC 2012 - The Olympic Broadcaster

It's almost all over . . . (November 2011)

The garish colour thing, blame LOGOC for that not the Beeb. Rather like the Torch Relay variant personally and don't feel the pink one is so offensive anymore. It's a context thing, not like the BBC Two endboards.

Well personally I dislike the logo being in different colours for reasons I've said a few times already, and the lightboxes with the logo being split into three different pieces. Someplace somwhere Lambie-Nairn is shaking his head. But I'm looking forward to what BBC TV will be like, and of course look like, during the Olympics and Paralympics.

And here it is . . . the first BBC 2012 trailer, to be shown on screen for the first time, according to Roger Mosey, at some stage today.!

It was shown directly after New Years Live last night. I presume that was the first broadcasting of it?

That it would have been.

I felt you might feel objections to the logo being demeaned like this! Wink I'm reiterating this point but does anyone else think there might be another promo more about the BBC as a whole from this? The whole intro to it was a lot more about their past, not about this year's productions so it's got me more interested in that than their big hitters.

Haha, yes I do but I can't keep moaning about it really. I just have to realise that nobody is going to stick to the same brand rules for 14 years. Surprised it lasted as long as it did really.

I think there probably will be a shorter 30 second version without the intro bit at the beginning going through what looked like a BBC archive storeroom. Do you reckon that was more of a "out with the old, in with the new" thing? There's a neon TOTP sign in there.

After all the discussion in the YouTube Gold thread I sat there thinking it was a new 'this is what we do' type ad!

Nice tidy trail there. Nice to see the 'three dimensional blocks' actually being used, after some time. Most BBC centres have these outside - even Click seemed to base their links around the BBC blocks at White City (?) in their review thing.

Agree with some of the other comments as well. Whilst one would be tempted to look purely to at the 'upcoming' stuff, I'd argue that it really needs to start with basics. All in all, nice start.

I've always been a fan of using a bit more colour in the design narrative so it's nice to see them employing colours - are they actually linked to specific sports though?

Roger Mosey used the term and most here, including myself, were directly quoting his words.

Also, it's semantics, nobody is going "wtf is a block lol?" are they?

That somewhere probably being a very nice villa in the Caribbean considering the cash he's picked up for his work over the years. A small minority of people here seem to care much more about so called "branding guidelines" than anyone at the BBC or Lambie Nairn ever did.

It's a nice enough promo, but I do wish they'd gone unashamedly Olympic with it rather than making it a completely generic promo.

Uh-huh. And you just presume that, eh?

I suggest you watch some of Martin Lambie-Nairn's lectures before coming out with statements like that.

They didn't go unashamedly Olympic with it because it is a generic promo, just outlining what they're upto for the year in terms of big things not specifically Olympic related.
