According to a tweet from BBC Spotlight I've just seen, it looks like Justin Leigh is being sent to Bristol to present Spotlight's 1330 bulletin! Guess they have a spare studio...

Why not present it using their SNG van somewhere suitable within the region, (using a spare gallery at Bristol, or anywhere for that matter?) Ironic given the hundreds of 'pointless, just because we can' OB presentations that are done, here's actually a legitimate reason to present off site using SNG ! Rolling Eyes

There's also this from their Facebook page:

Some of you have asked why it's not possible to broadcast television from our Exeter studio. The costs of having a standby television capability in Exeter would be very high, and although we are dealing with exceptional circumstances in Plymouth at the moment, we hope to have things back to normal very soon. We do have a standby generator, but that would not help us with the current fault, which has burnt through a section of cable in a large switch.

Because if the OB link fails, you have a blank screen...

Plus the SNG is probably too busy acting as a mobile edit suite to be able to set up for location presenting.

Slightly surprising that they have decamped to Bristol rather than Southampton, as the latter have two studios (although I'm not certain that both have cameras) although I get that Bristol has better connectivity. I assume the lunchtime opt will be a pre record as Points West will be occupying the studio? Or is Justin going there for a joint double header?

Well, that's true for any OB ? It would still need to be supported by a gallery somewhere

Although most programmes presented from location have somebody in studio ready to take over?

Which you could, in the studio attached to the supporting gallery. Anyway, never mind, it's not going to happen, so game over

A Normal Lunchtime programme, I'd assume David Braine (Weather) joined Justin Leigh in Bristol, although that was unclear could have been a VT'd forecast fed up the line. Very tight single camera angle on Justin though throughout.

So could we see a Spotlight at 6:30 coming from Bristol, or another dual programme but with Justin Leigh (who I assume is a Spotlight presenter) co-presenting alongside a Points West presenter?

Presumably Points West Lunchtime ran as usual at 1.30 on BBC West. I therefore assume another separate BBC SW Spotlight produced as the 1.30 from Bristol, will be broadcast, for at least some if not, all of the 6.30 slot.

Bristol is a lot easier to get to than Southampton, the M5 rather than fiddly A roads

Of course he could also have gone from Plymouth to Bristol Temple Meads on a train!
