Oh don't get me wrong, I think the documentaries they made were very good... however, today's coverage, being the actual day itself, could have been somewhat better.
And I also agree with how ITV's regional killing of regions such as YTV has stopped us from seeing the quality of service we once had. Looking at the cuts Countdown are making right now, is quite ironic among the celebrations. If YTV were still around in their previous form, perhaps these budget cuts wouldn't be happening.
It was a good programme but they could have dug out more old idents and opening titles and showed them on the programme
They went to a good effort with the studio as well, they could have just sat all the guests on the usual ITV corporate benches
A question about old YTV. It was said that they moved to the newscentre in 1990. It seems strange that a studio was provided in the new building but they didn't actually use it for Calendar for about 5 years. Did they actually use the studio for anything 1990-1995. Just the odd studio based regional programme?
Nice to hear Duncan at the end saying, "We hope to be here for many, many more weeks to come!", an obvious dig in the ribs towards ITV.
There seemed to be a number of digs at ITV plc (not that I blame the YTV folks!). Not just Duncan's 'many more weeks' quote, but Duncan made reference to the 'wonderful set' (I think I've seen it somewhere before!) following Fred Dinenage's birthday message. Not doubting the fact that all of the news looks the same in ITV plc world nowadays!
In the weather Jon Mitchell mentioned that if he had to use one weather word to describe the next 40 years it'd be 'changable'. Ironic in the sense that cap that was showing on screen when he said that was the old ITV Yorkshire end cap (2004-2006), when the rest were variations of the chevron.
YTV are making a big thing about the 4-0 now because they know that 50 is an unlikely milestone. Some ITV stations have already been comprehensively gutted, and ultimately what happens to smaller stations today will follow on to the larger ones tomorrow.

The Newsroom was relocated but the old Studio 2 (Cal's original studio) remained in use for sometime and for a goodwhile there was a set in the Newsroom too before the new studio was put in.
I think Sid Waddell had had a few scoops before the programme. Nice to see Dickie Bird, he's hardly ever on Calendar!
There was a contribution from Fred Dineage too, Duncan commented that the set on Meridian Tonight looks familar!
I'm surprised Bob Warman didn't crop up either, since he was a former YTV face and a good friend of Twice Nightly-- nice tribute to the latter at the end. No appearance from the Chuckle Brothers either; but we did get Sir Jimmy Saville, so who am I to complain.
I think R Jon's chevron pointer was a kitsch bit of nostalgia-- I like the way he pointed it at the camera and nodded-- as if to say "balls to ITV Yorkshire". I note he also showed the various YTV logos over the years on his weathermap.
Did Calendar send Look North a birthday message by the way?

I was surprised too at the lack of Bob Warman - given he was the Good Morning Calendar presenter, his role at YTV was also a significant one IMO, and it's also a surprise YTV didn't reflect this at all in their documentaries or on Calendar last night.
It was nice and respectful, given the current circumstances, that Kathryn Apanowicz took part in the programme, but I'm sure her invitation to take part was sent out long before the Countdown machinations of the past week.

Plus I imagine any nastiness has originated from either suits at Channel 4 or at ITV Productions in London depending on which report you read rather than anyone at Yorkshire Television. I can't imagine anyone at YTV saying anything bad about Richard Whiteley
To be honest there was loads left out of the documentary that could have featured and the Calendar special could have filled a programme 3 times as long. Back in 1998 it probably did
Good to see Richard won the 'Yorkshire icons' vote that was on the internet. It was pretty much a forgone conclusion though
A good programme, nice to have some familiar faces back and a nice message from Christa and Harry.
Did like the "wonderful set" comment from Duncan, completely misunderstood by the co-presenter! The extra long look at the Colour Production slide was a nice touch too.
Anyway, I've posted in the other thread some pics from YTV 1996 so here's how Calendar looked...
