i had the unfortunate experience of catching an episode of 'you've been framed' the other night and wondered, the laughter over the clips - is it simply a track added during post production, or is the programme shown before an audience and their laughter captured and added to the show this way?

i ask because some of the laughter during some of the clips seemed to tie in exactly with what was happening.

also, how many other shows gives an illusion of an audience which isn't actually there? tv burp for instance, is there really an audience or not?

I remember in the early days of You've Been Framed there was an audience, but since Harry Hill took over and does the voiceovers it's been very canned laughter or at least sounds like it.

What about the midweek Lotto draws, do they have an audience?

It does sound like Audience in a Can (TM) to me, and you never see them.

But for the love of God don't tell the Points of View forums, they'll have a fit. Rolling Eyes

TV Burp definitely has an audience - Digital Spy is normally full of people giving away what's going to be on the show because of it.

Never mind about the audience, the Lobster is back, that's the main news here.

Happy New Year you old sod. Thought you'd fallen in The Wash.

The thing I don't like about YBF these days is there seems to be a lot more clips sourced from equivalent shows in other countries... particularly America... although some of them are quite funny.

Could the increase of clips from other countries mean that Brits are losing interest in the programme, particularly with all the tweaks its had over the years and the numerous presenter changes? The production team do seem a bit desperate for new material these days...

I don't think they do, no.

The state YBF is in now is quite embarrasing. If it wasn't for that genius who goes by the name of Harry Hill, i'd consider the show to be dead. They really need to go back to the days of the studio... even if it does mean Jonathan Wilkes.

I remember watching one and noticed every cheer sounding exactly the same. Then it dawned on me; why would hundreds of people go to TVC to watch balls pop out of a machine for five minutes?

Well You've Been Framed celebrates its 18th birthday this year. Takes me back when Jeremy Beadle use to present it.

The Lotto draws which are live on both a Saturday and Wednesday night don't have a studio audience and use canned laughter tracks from previous recorded Lotto shows when they did have an audience.

I was at a recording a quite a while ago for the 'National Lottery: Big Ticket' and before the show went out we were asked to record some cheers as Alan Dedicote said some numbers randomly. This was then played over the top of the audience cheering for the main numbers in the actual live draws.

The 'quiz' parts of the Lotto shows are always pre-recorded, usually in the afternoon or earlier on in the week.

Other shows which have used canned laughter recently are:

- You've Been Framed (as already mentioned) (Harry Hill era)
- The Graham Norton (Best Of) Show (broadcast 2nd Jan)
- TVs Naughtiest Blunders (with Neil Morrisey v/o)
- Outtake TV (old series recently broadcast on BBC Two)
- The Catherine Tate Christmas Show (except 'Nan' scenes)
- Two Pints of Lager... and a Packet of Crisps (Musical episode)
- Ant and Dec's Christmas Takeaway (which was ditched for not being 'festive enough' according to ITV)

TV Burp's audience often pre-empts Hill's challenge of "there's only one way to find out: fight".
