The Young Ones

Lost in archives you say, BBC... (January 2008)

This site closed in March 2021 and is now a read-only archive

I know Wikipedia is NOT a reliable source, but it mentions about The Young Ones DVD releases, and how original footage like outtakes could not be featured because such footage has been lost on archives, which is believable.

However, i've not long come across these. This Youtube user has uploaded 14 videos of raw footage from the show. What the hell did they mean by "lost"?

They probably are lost in the archives. From the looks of those youtube copies, they are probably copies of copies of copies of the original which probably made it into the public domain eventually via one of the people who worked on the show giving it to somebody else, and them selling it on eBay or something.

Touché. I thought they were just very old.

Yes - offline VHS/UMatic copies of the raw studio recordings would routinely be made alongside the broadcast studio recordings on 2" Quad or 1" C Format VT. The studio raw recording broadcast tapes may have been recycled once the shows had been edited but that would still leave non-broadcast quality viewing copies knocking around...

On the (I think series 3) DVD of Red Dwarf. There is a disclaimer of how the original BBC copies of the series trailers got 'lost' and that the ones on the disc are a VHS copy from a private fan's collection.

So stuff the BBC did loose is often still out there in the hands of collectors.

But why would you expect the BBC to keep them?

I don't think it's usual for the BBC (or any broadcatser) to keep trailers, the most common place where they'll be found are on off-air recordings most likely those from people who recorded it at home.

The only ones they would keep are ones needed for showreels/awards or particually important/expensive ones. I doubt ones for Red Dwarf would fit that category

As late as the 90s, some trailers were actually put together and voiced live. There was a separate gallery and voiceover booth for that very purpose down the corridor from NC1 and 2. As trails came more commonplace on both networks (as opposed to a series of slides) more and more trails became prerecorded onto tape. I'm not sure how long the tapes were kept, but I'm pretty sure that by the late 90s, although the individual playout tapes for each trail were recycled, a compilation tape was made by promotions. The comp tapes might not have had the final 'versioned' trail as broadcast though - i.e. it wouldn't have had the caption "BBC One, Friday 7.00" or the voiceover.

I think it was old Red Dwarf I & II which had one or two they found in the Archives, as you say the rest are off air.

Same case with the C/A clips on the Doctor Who DVD's, some have their original airings & repeat airings C/A although some barely have one if that, all are from fans although it looks as if they have managed to reuse the idents in some as sometimes they look brand new, but the sound is obviously the original

Lots of Young Ones fans donated footage like this that they had collected for the new DVDs, but NONE of it was used!

The new DVDs contain the programmes as broadcast first time around, apparently, but there is at least one scene on the original DVDs that isn't on the new DVDs, as it was cut at the time but got put back in somewhere along the line. It's where Rick walks into his bedroom and his teddy bears are 'at it' on the bed. Also, the VHS release of the complete Young Ones has one extra flash screen in series two, in the scene where Dawn French comes in dressed as the Easter bunny.

I dunno about all the C/A clips on Dr Who DVDs coming from fans. Some would just be on the end of tapes used to record the off-air output from Grandstand I would think, as I know some of the 70s clips start with some sports results or something.

Some are (poor in some cases at least) recreations using the original audio.

Yes, some are original showing the BBC 1/2 Ident in "as recorded" condition some however have the visuals cleaned up but the audio the same (some sound like they were recorded from a far distance as they have that "talk in cup" sound.

Regarding Grandstand, seeing how Doctor Who used to follow on from Grandstand maybe in those instances people accidently recorded slightly early?
