I stumbled across this article, and it brought back fond memories of watching The Young Doctors on ITV in the afternoons in the 80s. Channel 10 plan to bring the show back to Australian screens (although it originally aired on Channel Nine) and strip it weekdays at 6pm.

A couple of points - ITV's attempt to resurrect Crossroads was hardly successful, it's quite possible that Young Doctors Mark II will be a flop in Oz. Those who remember Mark I are likely to be disappointed; those who don't will perhaps show little interest.

Conversely, if the show is a moderate or great success, maybe ITV could have found an import that would sit well in the 5pm-6pm slot (with an early-afternoon repeat or debut, perhaps)? Though I doubt it would have the same appeal as Home and Away or Neighbours did in the 80s and 90s.

Any thoughts?

The Young Doctors - Excellent Programme.....Though the theme music always sounded like it was being played from under 16 heavily stained surgical matresses.

How spooky - was only thinking about Young Doctors yesterday!

Hasn't Alan Dale come a long way since then? (He played Jim in Neighbours and is now in Ugly Betty and The OC!)

To say that crossroads (mk3 - mk2 was Nicola Freeman era!!) was a flop for ITV is wrong as it did beat Neighbours in the same 5-6 timeslot. Also the audience, again, was increasing near the end of its run (the same thing happened near the end of the original run (mk1 and 2)). The storylines were getting stronger and the characters were beginning to bed in quite nicely - remember for a soap to work properly it does need the best part of 18 months for it to be on air!!!!

What spoilt Crossroads, to the delight of ITV (ex Granada bosses!!! - who hated Crossroads both original and new versions) was the last incarnation which was BLOODY awful - even it was aimed at gay community (how many of the gay community actually watched the last version!!!!!?)

With regards to New Young Doctors - the best thing to do is to completely forget about the history of the show - except for the place where it is set (Albert Memorial). It needs good looking actors/actresses and good storylines but most of all it needs to time to settle into its stride and for people to know about it and start watching it.

I do hope it does do well as it would be a good lead into Neighbours!!!

Plus it could be a good replacement for Neighbours on BBC1!!!

I always get this confused with The Flying Doctors. Both used to be on after Neighbours right?

Well, both used to be on in the afternoons at some point. The Young Doctors didn't usually commute via light plane, unless the storyline involved a crash! The Flying Doctors didn't usually get told off for being in nurses' quarters after 10pm either!

UPDATE: The Young Doctors, the classic 70s TV show, is set to be jazzed up with confirmation the Nine Network is remaking the program and will screen it in primetime in 2008.

Previous reports indicated the Ten Network was making the series, however Nine CEO David Gyngell has told The Telegraph that contracts with FremantleMedia have been signed.

Flying Doctors (the series) ran on the BBC - though the pilot also aired on C4 ISTR. Young Doctors ran on ITV ISTR (TVS showed it I think)

Hopefully the new one will be a bit better produced than the old one!!

The soundtrack always sounded as if it was recorded on one of those old Kaytapes using an Amstrad midi system.

It won't be the same without the spelling mistakes in the closing credits and looking like it was made on £100.

It'll actually be appearing on Nine so the weekday thing may not be true..
