This Year's Worst TV

The Antidote to the National Television Awards (October 2007)

I am mildly annoyed that while we have the National Television Awards on ITV1 awarding the best of this year's TV (apparently ITV soap operas and reality television programmes), there's been more carp than is usual in this year's telly. And these things being awarded at the NTAs seem to consist mostly of things that are downright awful !

What would we say is the worst of this year's TV? We've had the awful Classical Star , DanceX , The X Factor , Big Brother , and the nonsense on BBC3 including My Penis And I , My Man Boobs And Me , Help Me, Anthea, I'm Infested , and the endless repeats of Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps and even the flogging of the excellent Doctor Who to death.

And of course, let's not forget EastEnders , the single worst TV programme ever made, closely followed by Coronation Street and Emmerdale . And it seems that all but two of the people in the 'most popular actor/actress' category are - guess what - in soap operas. There's far better acting talent out there than most of the chaff in those programmes.

So, over to you. What's been the absolute worst TV this year so far?

Yes, I know Channel Five, especially after the DOG was reintroduced is infernal, but that would make it unfair for the others.

Good one, list the most popular, award winning programmes on TV as the worst. Lame.

TV critics are obviously very strange people.

And FTR, my problem with Doctor Who is that it's flogged to death with endless repeats on BBC3.

The most popular usually is the worst. The least popular is usually the best.

To be fair though, that doesn't make it a bad programme. Sure, watching it countless times might ruin it, but repeats are really the fault of the broadcaster.

That's what I intended to say.

Anyway, another to add to the list: Dirty Rotten Cheater . It's horrible, nasty, and manipulative television.

Nothing wrong with Classical Star. Just because it has had poor viewing figures and is uninteresting to those not into classical music... Sad

No, it's the fact that it's The X Factor disguised as a documentary and with the pop music replaced with classical music.

I like Dirty Rotten Cheater. Whilst it's not one of my favourite gameshows, it's got an interesting format. Yes, in a way it's just mixing two already existing formats, but I think it works. It may be "horrible, nasty and manipulative", but that's life I'm afraid. Backstabbing, lying, deceit and bitching are all day-to-day occurrences in most people's lives, and this gameshow reflects it perfectly. Plus there's Brian Conley. Smile

Yeah-- good point. The thing is about the list at the top of the thread, is that whether these programmes are bad/good, is mostly subjective.

I suppose the objective way of measuring whether those programmes are good/bad, is to look at how well they do in their slots (in terms of average audience figures and audience share).
