John Lewis are resting on their laurels, in my opinion. For me, nothing has quite captured the warmth of the Bear and the Hare (interchange if necessary). The trampoline advert was a bit of light-hearted relief but was a step away from the emotion that their adverts are renown for. But this once seems to lack any humour, any emotion, and any clear message.
I wouldn't be too surprised if Channel 4 decided to still use the 2015 Christmas idents again. I know the "blockman" idents have just launched, however those Christmas ones would still align with the break-bumpers and trails which continue to use the 2015 style.
Either that or they might copy their efforts from Christmas 2004 to 2014 inclusive- and not bother at all!

For me, M&S are winning this year so far.
I agree, Larry. The 2017 John Lewis ad is nice enough but it doesn't quite "do it" for me, I'm afraid. Their previous efforts have been much better.
And yes, the M&S one is their best for years. But then how can you go wrong with Paddington?

Having watched the John Lewis ad a few time and talked about it with colleagues, it's the emotional journey of a kid being kept awake at night by a monster. The worst part for me is when the monster waves his last goodbye after giving him the present of the lamp.

But he doesn't. He comes back as soon as he turns the lamp off. I don't quite understand though why the monster would give him the gift of a lamp which ultimately get's rid of him. It's the ending that doesn't really make sense and let's the advert down.
I just don't follow the story. He befriends the monster, he gives him a present, then he buggers off? Or if he's afraid of the dark, so the monster buys him the lamp... was the monster using it as an excuse to leave him alone? Granted, it's not as mind boggling as the Man on the Moon advert (seriously, what!?) but an advert like this shouldn't leave me scratching my head.
It would've made more sense if, say, the monster lived under the bed and the kid was terrified of it. Then it buys him a lovely present for Christmas and he kid realises the monster is actually quite nice. It'd be heartwarming and also tell us not to judge a book by its cover and all that kinda stuff.
M&S has picked a character from a film that has already been given the moniker as the best ever film sequel, film of the year, and a future Christmas classic, which has received universal critical acclaim up to now. They couldn't have chosen a better film tie-in for their ad if they tried.
Johm Lewis has done the usual middle class tearjerker.

The kid falls asleep doing activities in the day so I guess the monster got him the lamp so he could sleep better as he’s spending the night awake. Quite sweet.
Sainsbury's are to launch their Christmas advert tonight at 19:45 within The X Factor.
IMO they've delivered amazing packages over the past few years, all very different; somber to celebratory but all wonderful productions.
2014:
2015:
2016:
There's been nothing revealed about it so far, presumably they will make a big production again.
Interesting to note that last year's Sainsbury's advert launched during 'I'm A Celebrity...' on November 14th. Is the programme being held back a week to increase advert share further into December?
