It's not beyond comprehension to have both X factors going on at the same time - don't Len and someone else do Strictly and Dancing With The Stars at the same time.

Yes they flew out to LA on Sunday for a midweek show and then back in time for SCD on Saturday. The big difference though, apart from the contrived 'mentoring' aspect, is that they aren't in charge of SCD, X Factor is Simon's show.

Cowell quits Idol, to launch X Factor USA in Fall 2011, which puts a huge question mark over The X Factor UK. Could it lose Cowell, could ITV lose The X Factor, or could it be moved from it's lucrative pre-Christmas slot to avoid losing Cowell,

It's unlikely but there's no reason why ITV couldn't commission another series of Pop Idol if The X Factor isn't available this Autumn. Now that would be an interesting move

Think you've hit the nail on the head there.

"Mentoring", from what I can glean, consists of about an hour of pep-talks over the course of the week, and a glib song choice emailed to the contestant's singing coach.

"Mentoring" my ar$e.

The judges mentoring the acts was a key point of the show. I think Sharon Osbourne said a few years back on the live show about Simon flying back and forwards. With Dannii being pregnant (not sure if that's officially confirmed) I'm guessing that will rule her out this year. Shame because she is the hardest working judge, going on what previous contestants have said and seems the most interested. Thus makes way for Victoria Beckham after her audition on American Idol (well that's how I see it)

Well Simon was quite firm in saying she wouldn't be one of the US judges at least in the press conference yesterday.

The judges being the mentors is a key part of the format and they've never hidden it's as much about the judges as it is the contestants, and the bias that comes with that is all a part of that (and really has little bearing on the overall winner). It could work in the UK I suppose with Simon being the impartial judge and taking on a kind of Andrew Lloyd Webber role, having the sole vote in the final showdown, but in the US he'd need to be a mentor.

And made a contradictory statement the day before - so I wouldn't go taking anything he says as gospel.

Why don't they give the contestants proper mentors - artists that can teach these kids how to use their voices properly.

What on earth is Simon or Lois supposed to be able to teach them?

Why am I asking? I don't even watch. Confused

Now that would be Fame Academy.

I really can't see that happening. If ITV did lose The X Factor, I think the most likely thing is they'll be a new re-hash of the format (probably produced by, but not starring Cowell) rather than a return to a brand which though successful at the time, isn't really looked back upon favourably.

Is it not? It certainly has a half decent legacy, as does Popstars

How about the Forgotten TV Show, Popstars Wink
Its successful in Germany.

If Simon was to leave ITV then Pop Idol could probably return, seeing he's the main issue that caused it to stop in the first place. I always preferred it personally anyway, the whole Will/Gareth series has never been topped by any music series on ITV.

I really can't see X Factor USA working because they will still have American Idol on. I know they are two different shows, but the similarities are still there, although you never know.

Well I think either Idol without Cowell or The X Factor is destined to fail, so realistically they'll probably only be on together for one season, two max before either The X Factor takes Idol slot or it gets axed and Cowell returns with his tail between his legs.

More over-shadowed than forgotten really and it was very successful in the UK too. And it did produce two of the most high profile women on TV: Mylenne Klass and Cheryl Cole!

Incidently it does make me question Cheryl's credentials for the X Factor, after all it wasn't long ago she was a contestant!
