RATM are the UK's official No.1.

its NOT the christmas no1 yet! as there is still 4 days you can still buy songs( unless there have changed the rules:

1980: St Winifred's School Choir: reached on 27 Dec, reached No1 stop 23 Dec

1985: Shakin' Stevens: reached on 28 Dec, actual date reached number 24 Dec

1986: Jackie Wilson: reached on 27 Dec, actual date reached number one 23 Dec

1990: Cliff Richard: 29 Dec, actual date reached 23 Dec

which means Some else could come along and take the christmas crown.

It finishes on the Sunday before Christmas...

So? It doesn't have to be a Christmas song to be Christmas number 1.The all-important Xmas charts has, as others said, always been the last Sunday before Christmas. It's always been the way since the charts existed in 1952, when Here in My Heart by Al Martino was Christmas number 1.

It hasn't always been that way, the chart used to be announced on a Tuesday lunchtime, they only moved to Sunday in 1987. But the principle was the same, the Christmas number 1 was what was at number 1 on Christmas Day. So even if Christmas Day was on a Monday, the Christmas number 1 was announced 6 days earlier.

Perhaps that's where 623058 is getting confused?

They were all Christmas Number 1 because they were number 1 in the last chart before Christmas Day
The 23rd December 1980 and 1986 were Tuesdays, as was the 24th December 1985
The chart moved from Tuesday to Sunday in 1987
23rd December 1990 was a Sunday

Honestly, I feel like I'm the only person who feels that (*dramatic music*) PEETAH DICKSON AND HIS NOOO INDOOR VOYCE (*swoooooowsh*) thing is now totally played out. I didn't really notice it or care for most of the series until the end, where the three contestants came out three times a piece.

Though it may be because of the Dermot episode of Buzzcocks where Dickson recorded all sorts of announcements and Dermot was constantly smacking that soundboard.

One thing you can't deny, though, this show has a whole lot of filler time, probably to add an extra advert break or two that ITV can charge high rates for.

SO who think the X factor will get moved next year to finish on 4th Dec 2010 thus given at least 2 weeks before Christmas or more likely 25th Dec, so it missing out trying to take the Xmas no1

It won't be moved at all because the final airs on what is probably the most lucrative weekend for ITV advertising wise - perfectly places with over a week before Christmas to plug what the advertisers want Santa to deliver.

Maybe Simon will have to pick a better song next time.
