I think they opted for a couple of slightly longer ad breaks within The X Factor instead. ITV is allowed to show 12 minutes of advertising per hour of the day, so it's possible to show four minutes at 9, another four minutes at 9.15, and then two minutes at 9.30 and 9.45, for example.
One thing I'm surprised they didn't do actually was extend the 2-hour shows by ten minutes, which would have allowed an extra ad break (not that there wasn't enough as it was!).

AIUI there are also opportunities - with some restrictions - for ITV to shuffle this slightly - so they can schedule more commercially effectively?

Frustrating when people are totally missing the point with this Rage Against The Machine thing anyway.
Cretins going "Oh yeah, me wanna stop Cowell too!!Y$W&$£!" It's not about that.
Sorry, as you were.

I think you're right. The race for Christmas number one always used to be quite exciting, and I miss that. I'm bored of the way the Christmas number one is now generally a foregone conclusion and based purely on the hype of X Factor. I've no doubt that had Joe McElderry farted rather than sung his song, it still wouldn't fare any worse in the charts.
Call me naïve and old fashioned, but it'd be nice for a change to have a Christmas number one which got there purely because it was a great song.

Depends on what he's been eating.
I mean, he's cute - but lets not go nuts.

The VT intros only started in series 5, but looking on YouTube the other day in series 4 the simpler VTs were then followed by a shot of the audience as Peter DIckson introduced the act. Think Kate Thornton introduced them in earlier series.
A question, has Peter Dickson always done the voiceover work on The X Factor or has his voice and his famous big introductions only been used in recent years?
It has to be said that the show wouldn't seem the same without the voiceovers thesedays
