I love watching the X Factor however from the clips/trailers ive seen I cant help feeling the auditions are a bit OTT. I preferred it when it was just the judges - there was plenty of time for the audience to be shouting and screaming in the boot camp and live show stages.
I agree they should have held back the audience until the Boot Camp stage, or if they wanted something different for the auditions just had small intimate audiences (perhaps just the other auditionees) to differentiate it from Britain's Got Talent.
That said though as someone who pretty much skips over the audition stage as concentrating on the crap rather than the talent really annoys me, the tweaked format might end up working for me.
I'm not against the idea of an audience at the auditions, but part of the magic of the X Factor auditions was the quiteness and the judges reactions. I'm sure a lot of us have been in hysterics when a rubbish act has walked in and the judges have started uncontrollably laughing because of it or their faces speak volumes. With an audience that is completely lost and we'll just get shots of Simon looking bored. How memorable would this audition and this audition be without an audience? Probably not very, just a crowd booing them off with the judges smiling.
Also if they have knocked the Excel idea on the head, I think it's a good move. They wouldn't really be able to have a huge set due to space and lighting issues and problems would arise for ITV2 whose studio is traditionally placed at the back of the audience (barring series 4). In theory it does seem like a good idea but in practice I don't think it would work as expected.
They've also introduced backing tracks for the auditions I believe, which kind of ruins the purity of it all. My bigger concern Is the effect on Britain's Got Talent though - the live auditions were their unique selling point, and in nicking them for The X Factor Cowell is putting his other main brand at risk.
I think the audience reactions will be different, I don't think they will be too similar. BGT has buzzers so the judges (and to an extent the crowd) have a say over how long they can perform for. On X Factor its just until Simon sticks his hand up or the song comes to an end. So that will largely stop the panto that is the BGT auditions appearing on X Factor. If anything he is actually opening X Factor up to a whole new audience, being those who like BGT and have never really watched X Factor.

They did have backing tracks at the auditions. In fact, the backing track was so loud I couldn't hear the acts themselves at a few points.

That's true.. but with the good ones when I went they got them to start with about 30 secs of singing acapella then following with the singing with the backing track.
ITV has confirmed that this year’s X Factor will move its results show to Sundays, with a live face-off for the two contestants with the fewest votes.
ITV’s director of entertainment and comedy Elaine Bedell confirmed the scheduling shift this afternoon (August 18th) following months of speculation..
Bedell said: “The new Sunday results show will be a fantastic way of building excitement and anticipation across two nights of live television and with performances from some extra special guest stars The X Factor will now be an event spectacular across the whole weekend.”
