Excellent article in today's Daily Mail about The X Factor, entitled "Blood Sport Television". The article concentrates on the decision to lower the minimum age from 16 to 14 and what possible motives producers may have for doing so.
The case of Emma Chawner is mentioned - and having had the misfortune to see her audition myself, the use of The Flumps sig tune was nothing short of sick.

Why does it not surprise me that you found an article in the Daily Mail excellent?

If your suggestion the Mail article has influenced my views, nothing could be further from the truth. I just happened to see the same piece of television and reached the same opinion.

Well, the Rugby World Cup final is that night at 8pm so that's doubtful.
I'd have thought they'd air the first X Factor show at 6pm, RWC at 7.45pm then the X Factor results at 10pm.
When it comes to the RWC final there should be a bit more build up and aftermath, but they could still just about get away with it by airing The X Factor at around 5.45pm, RWC at 7.30pm then the X Factor results around 10.15pm.
Not ideal, but the performance shows have aired that early and results shows that late before now - so not really a problem. Ant and Dec would just have to take a couple of weeks off.

According to the Radio Times website there will be no X Factor at all on Saturday 13th October due to the Rugby World Cup. So I guess the first live show will be 20th October.

...Yeh, not like Ant & Dec need to be in Australia or anything...
It really does annoy me how sport supasses everything on Television, even 2 of ITV's biggest rating winners. Yeh, Sod you Cowell and Ant & Dec on your multi million contracts - let's get a few trys in! Laughable really.

Not good news for The X Factor at all. ITV are effectively handing the BBC the ratings crown. Allowing SCD to establish its audience whilst XF takes a week off isn't the best strategy. Surely they should have sacrificed Ant and Dec? XF will have a hard time of it - it also means we have less live shows this year which is a shame.
I'd love to know what Cowell thinks about the decision - he can't be pleased.
