Simon to Ray just after Leona had won: "I'm gonna give you a career".

Leona won with 60% of the vote apparently.

Press reports today indicate that Simon Cowell has signed a three year deal with ITV to continue making the X-Factor. It's future seems assured for a while yet.

That's good news anyway.

No, that's very bad news.

Kind of undermines the whole point of the show really, but what the heck, I enjoy watching it.

What worries me most is that in today's papers Simon Cowell claims this has been the biggest and best of all the series - yet alot of people here and the critics agree that the changes made haven't done the show any favours at all!

It was interesting watching ITV2 this morning and Shayne Ward's "winners story" - seeing the judges saying exactly the same things about him a year ago as they are saying about Leona now.

Except that the difference in quality between Leona Lewis and Shayne Ward is colossal. Talent alone doesn't guarantee you any sort of career of course, and neither does winning The X Factor , but Leona really is an astonishingly good vocalist. That should stand her in very good stead.

Haven't watched a huge amount of the series - but I don't think she demonstrated "astonishingly good" vocal talents last night... You have to be VERY good to out-Whitney Whitney - and she didn't come close. Some of her sustained notes were painfully off.

I'm not saying I could do better. I'm not saying she's dreadful - I am saying she didn't seem to be "outstanding"...

I DID watch some of the earlier editions - and was distinctly underwhelmed by most of the performances vocally.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree! I have watched most of the series and her tuning has been spot on for the vast majority of the time. Her control and range are very impressive and I would've said she certainly came very close to Whitney. "Painfully off"??? Check your speakers! Wink

No doubt Leona is a good vocalist - but so is Shayne. Also when it comes to the personality issue he should win hands down!

Just out of interest, anyone remember Maria?

Hmm. So Shayne is a good vocalist and has a fantastic personality (however you measure that)?

Nuff said, really. There are no guarantees, no matter how good (or not) you are.

Shayne who?

Thinking that myself after I wrote it!

At the end of the day though it's marketing, not talent, which makes the difference in the music business. Shayne should have been very marketable - but somewhere it's gone wrong!

Probably with Louis who's strategy seems to be suits and stools - probably not the best for Shayne!

At least Leona probably has the best out of the three.
