I don't really think audiences would rise much for either show if SCD and The X Factor were staggered through the night - essentially they've got different demographics targetting old and young!

Having said that though there are a few in the middle who like to follow both - but could you really sit through 90 minutes of SCD then 90 minutes of X Factor and then the results of both?

But it would affect the figures, because when SCD and X Factor were heard to head SCD was ahead by quite a bit. Yet once SCD finished, X Factor gained a million viewers. I think both shows would benefit from being on separately.

The earlier time slot is absolutely ridiculous if you ask me. The X Factor should start straight after SCD.

Remember though that Robin Hood was supposed to be getting massive ratings so they probably thought putting X Factor against that would have been even worse

Plus what would they then put up against SCD?, Any programme wouldn't do as well as X Factor and therefore increase SCD's ratings as a result

Well X Factor would easily beat Robin Hood.

I think if X Factor started a bit later, maybe during the middle of SCD, it would have a greater average as more viewers would watch after SCD. Just put Millionaire on beforehand. It probably wouldn't do that well, but what would? ITV need to be thinking about X Factor's overall ratings.

No, ITV need to be thinking about ITV's overall ratings. Millionaire would attract a similar audience to SCD and would stand no chance in direct competition - and the loss in ratings wouldn't neccessarily be compensated by the rise in The X Factor.

The schedule for Saturday 11th November is already known for BBC1, but not for ITV. It looks like this

5:20 BBC News
5:40 Strictly Come Dancing
6:55 Robin Hood
7:40 The National Lottery: 1 vs 100
8:30 Casualty
9:15 Strictly Come Dancing: Result
9:35 Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance
11:10 BBC News
11:30 Match of the Day

If you worked at ITV, how would you schedule against that to ensure a win on peak time share for ITV?

I usually frown on mock schedules, but I think this is ok as it's focussed

You have to use the programmes that will actually be on by the way and the same durations

No listings for ITV1, but from ITV2's schedule it's the same as next week, with the main show running for 90 minutes from 5.45pm and the second show running for 40 minutes from 8.15pm.

I guess it's all Robin Hood's fault, which has pushed SCD earlier into the schedule - plus of course The X Factor shows are longer this year.

As I said before moving The X Factor to finish after SCD would probably boost it's own ratings, but then ITV1 would be giving up in the battle against SCD - Millionaire wouldn't have a chance.

Perhaps putting it on even earlier might be the surprise solution, beginning the programme at 5.20pm against the BBC News. It's risky, but could work!

5.20pm The X Factor (the anti-BBC News/SCD audience)
6.50pm Millionaire (the anti-Robin Hood audience)
7.50pm The X Factor result
8.25pm Family Fortunes (the anti-Casualty audience)
9.15pm TBA

More realistically though it be something like:
6.05pm Family Fortunes
6.55pm The X Factor
8.30pm Millionaire
9.35pm The X Factor
10.10pm Parkinson

I wish you wouldnt keep saying X Factor and SCD have totally different target audiences. Many people, old and young watch both SCD and X Factor and they are both programmes you can watch at any age. Same with Robin Hood, Ant and Dec and WWTBAM.

This is how id do the ITV schedule for 11/11/06

5.00pm ITV Regional News
5.15pm ITV National News
5.35pm WWTBAM
6.35pm All Star Family Fortunes
7.25pm The X Factor
8.55pm Afterlife
9.55pm The X Factor Result
10.30pm Parkinson
11.30pm ITV News

I'd do it like this

4:50 Regional News
5:05 ITV Weekend News
5:20 All Star Family Fortunes - 20 mins to have a decent audience
6:10 The X Factor - Only half an hour would be against SCD
7:40 Who wants to be a Millionaire? - Head to head with 1 vs 100
8:40 The X Factor: Result
9:20 ITV Weekend News - opposite the SCD results so it doesn't effect the ratings of other programmes
9:35 Afterlife
10:35 Parkinson
11:35 It Shouldn't happen to...
12:35 ITV Play

7.25pm is far too late for The X Factor. A lot of people watch it before going out on a Saturday night.

I'm not one for fantasy schedules but perhaps Family Fortunes at 6.05pm and X Factor at 6.35pm?
