6pm should be the earliest though. It shouldn't be starting before that. Next week's show is starting at 5.45pm, which is absurd - of course ITV are making sure The X Factor is starting at the same as SCD.

Primetime has always started early on Saturday nights though - shows like Gladiators and The Generation Game all began around 6pm.

I understand that, but I do think a big show like The X Factor shouldn't be starting in the 5pm hour. Even that's a bit early for a Saturday night. 6pm would be fine.

They are obviously just following BBC1

SCD shouldn't really start during the 5pm hour, so they both should move later to allow ITV to show YBF! and BBC1 to show Just for Laughs

I agree. These light hearted shows should be on at that time, and the big guns should be brought out after 6pm. It makes a lot of sense because more people would be watching after 6pm, and ITV especially want as many people to watch X Factor. I mean, it peaked at over 9 million on Saturday, the average would have been higher had it started later.

It is only 10-15 minutes or so though. I'm more concerned about the other end of the schedule with Parkinson and the news being pushed out of primetime. ITV1 now have no news in primetime on Saturdays, with bulletins at around 5.00pm and 11.30pm.

Personally though I would start the Saturday schedule at 6pm - as I've said before I would fix a 30-minute weekend news bulletin at 5.30pm and then begin the primetime schedule after that.

The X Factor and Ant and Dec though combined are definately spread out over too much of the Saturday schedule - three hours between them would be fine.

Looking again at next Saturday's schedule, it's obviously BBC1 calling the shots because ITV are running the standard You've Been Framed slot, but just too early, which is leading to the Regional News and Sport being on at 4.45pm

As Brekkie Boy would say, BBC1 are showing one programme too many, since when has the Lottery show been on as late as 8pm

Oh well, at least there's a bit of variety - although Afterlife is back on ITV1 this week. I guess I didn't like last Saturday due to the boxing - there didn't seem to be much on - at least with Parkinson and Afterlife, we have more variety.

Well its only for 2 weeks that they will be showing around 4 hours of Ant and Dec and X Factor.

The week after next, according to the early schedules, The X Factor starts later at 6.05pm followed by WWTBAM at 7.45pm and the X Factor Results at 8.50pm. This means they have enough time for Afterlife and Parkinson before the late news at 11.25pm.

What I don't understand is why ITV (and the BBC, to that end) decide to let their Saturday night schedules be crap for months on end, then cram a million shows into the schedule over a period of weeks.

Is this some sort of strategy?

Its because its autumn now and apart from Doctor Who they always show the best shows in autumn/winter because of ratings.

ITV make most of their money during this period, as the advertisers spend most of their money during the run-up to Christmas, so that's when ITV bring out the big guns.

The BBC are just doing their job, and unlike ITV, tend to have a quite a good schedule throughout the year - no notable bad patches.

Well, apart from the Winter when the schedule is interupted every three weeks for the FA Cup - and of course the summer when crap like How do I solve a problem like Graham Norton airs!

Most people would regard the FA Cup as good television, and Maria was popular. It may not have beat X Factor, but it put up a good fight, and in fact, the final did beat X Factor.
