The ratings were good last night, although the early start affected both The X factor and Strictly Come Dancing. Unusually, the most watched show of the night was actually Ant and Dec:

1 …. 7.4 (33.3%) …. Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway (19:45) ITV
2 …. 7.3 (35.1%) …. The X Factor (17:45) ITV
3 …. 7.0 (31.1%) …. The X Factor - The Result (21:00) ITV
4 …. 6.9 (31.2%) …. Casualty (20:30) BBC1
5 …. 6.8 (30.9%) …. The National Lottery: 1 vs 100 (19:45) BBC1
6 …. 6.7 (30.1%) …. Robin Hood (19:00) BBC1
7 …. 6.7 (29.8%) …. Strictly Come Dancing (21:15) BBC1
8 …. 6.5 (32.9%) …. Strictly Come Dancing (17:45) BBC1
9 …. 5.0 (24.0%) …. The Vicar of Dibley (21:30) BBC1
10 … 4.6 (23.3%) …. BBC News; Weather (22:00) BBC1

Strictly Come Dancing was slightly ahead of The X Factor when they were first head to head, but once that ended, viewers switched over to ITV1, and The X Factor had a massive peak of 9 million, against Robin Hood, which saw its audience dip this week. The X Factor was ahead of SCD throughout both results shows.

Overall, ITV had the best audience share during peak time, with 31.8% against BBC One's 30.0%.

I think X Factor did well to hold on to its audience for the entire two hours, and this year the figures seem to be closer than ever. The figures are unusually low for both shows because they started earlier, and hopefully once the shows start later the averages will rise.

One point worth making is that Robin Hood, Casualty and The National Lottery all beat Strictly Come Dancing.

Once Ant and Dec's show comes to an end next week I expect we will see X Factor in a much better slot than 5.50pm.

The first show was 30 minutes too long too - could have got away with a later start really.

It's the last Ant and Dec next week but Millionaire will then return (presumably), while Afterlife should come to end soon, so it'll probably move to around 7pm, with Millionaire at 8.30pm and the results at 9.30pm.

Also - I doubt any of the girls have a chance again this year. I think in both the first two series the top three were all male. Perhaps next year splitting the solo stars up by sex, rather than age, would give them a better chance of finding a female winner.

Well the 2 hours flew by for me and I wasnt bored at all so I didnt think it was too long.

Would still have the same problem of people voting out the girls if they did that.

I expect the schedule will be

5.30 You've Been Framed
6.30 The X Factor
8.15 WWTBAM
9.15 The X Factor Result
9.50 Afterlife
10.50 Parkinson

Something like that

There's a logic to The X Factor being on at 6. A lot of the target audience are out on Saturday nights, and at the moment it's on at a perfect time for those preparing to go out to watch it. Worked for me anyway.

If it was on any later I would've missed it, like I missed the results show.

6pm should be the earliest though. It shouldn't be starting before that. Next week's show is starting at 5.45pm, which is absurd - of course ITV are making sure The X Factor is starting at the same as SCD.

It surprisingly managed to fill 2 hours quite well, and even with 2 hours Kate had to hurry people along a bit

Takeaway was long as well, and that was also tight for time at the end

The longer format doesn't suit Takeaway IMO. It should really be an hour. That's one show that I do get bored of very quickly, and I find myself switching over. Maybe it's just me, but I'm not a fan of 'Beat the Boys' or 'Ant Vs. Dec', and I don't find the show as enjoyable as I used to.

I go off that show quickly as well. An hour woul be long enough but they have obviously dragged it out a bit and now X Factor and Ant and Dec between them cover 4 hours on a Saturday night.

Primetime has always started early on Saturday nights though - shows like Gladiators and The Generation Game all began around 6pm.

I understand that, but I do think a big show like The X Factor shouldn't be starting in the 5pm hour. Even that's a bit early for a Saturday night. 6pm would be fine.

They are obviously just following BBC1

SCD shouldn't really start during the 5pm hour, so they both should move later to allow ITV to show YBF! and BBC1 to show Just for Laughs
