From what I've read, they keep mentioning the vote will 'open' during the show tonight, could that mean they'll do the actual results/sing off at the start of next Saturday's show instead?

They may be able to restructure - rejig filler (or extend the slot) and have long enough voting and verification windows still.

The problem for ITV is that XF & BGT are usually renewed together along with a talent deal for Cowell himself. They may well want to keep BGT but ditch XF although Cowell has said he has a list of other broadcasters willing to take the shows.

ITV may extend the life of XF just to keep hold of BGT and away from another broadcaster. If ITV lose BGT they lose another Ant & Dec vehicle. Then maybe they will want to do something else, somewhere else too.

So fairly high stakes and with the failure to find any new big light entertainment hits over the last decade it all has an end of an era feel about it.

Previously the two have been linked but Cowell isn't stupid and I doubt Cowell wants to remain connected to a failing show for too long. Last time it was renewed it was for a shorter run with no spin offs and a tighter budget.

Realistically Cowell has nowhere else to take BGT - even though it would fit quite nicely on BBC1 they'd get a lot of flack for poaching it and wouldn't be able to match the ITV budget. C4 and C5 wouldn't deliver the ratings

Cowell can take the decision into his own hands now and pull the cord before ITV swing the axe. Long term he is probably still in the best position to be supplying them with the next big talent show in the next decade.

Of course is production company is producing the new dance talent show for BBC One, so he isn’t limited to keeping his ideas with ITV.

The fiasco from last night saw the X Factor struggle to attract 3.7 million viewers according to the overnight ratings, peaking at 4.5 million.

Also, is it me, or I always thought the Saturday night edition was live. According to the BBC News website report on the sound problems, they said Saturday edition was recorded earlier in the afternoon of Saturday.

It is normally live. This week, it was pre-recorded as Robbie would have been absent on the evening due to a prior commitment, so the production team decided they could pre-record the episode and no-one would notice... and that went well...

Not sure you can directly attribute the low ratings to the technical issues.

The ratings did drop from 4.2m to 3.7m when the sound issues were happening and they didn’t go back up so I think you can. It was very irritating and lasted for a whole part of the show so it’s not surprising people switched off.

People are suggesting that the X Factor may move channels in future, although it may also stay on ITV. No one has mentioned XF possibly moving to MTV. Is that a viable option?

A music show on MTV? God forbid!

You'll be suggesting the local TV channels show news next.

Ending after 16 years is nothing to be ashamed of. It has had 8 times as many series as Popstars, Pop Idol and (non-celeb) Fame Academy.

The Voice has somehow hit 8 regular series and now outrates X Factor but although around the same ballpark figure as it's never hit the heights of The X Factor and isn't head to head with a rival show it doesn't feel look like a failing show on paper.
