The "windows" last year were screens though, not real.
I thought they might drop the room auditions again this year with Cowell being back - not entirely sure the double auditions worked last year. With Boot Camp axed though it would make sense to screen the room auditions first, then the Arena auditions before the move on to the six-chair challenge.

I don't think that the windows were actually screens, not 100% sure but from what I've seen they weren't.
I also liked the four chair challenge in the States, I thought it would be nice to see a change and get rid of the judges houses! But that'll never happen. The british public like that bit, but it's become nonsense with them going to hotels worldwide!!

They certainly look like screens in these images:

The compromise for the UK version worked well. Scrapping it in the US didn't make any sense really especially as they said the new challenge was to stand out from the competition more - so they replace the one and only thing which truly is unique to The X Factor for a studio elimination stage before the live shows which every other singing competition also does.
I wonder if the X stage will be shipped over to the UK now it's no longer needed Stateside.

The window frames could have been part of the set with real windows behind. However I do think they were screens.

I suppose the fact that the 'windows' were identical in all locations (obviously with different images) was the biggest indicator! It does make you think that the GMB 'windows' could be considerably better really.

This time the main look of each audition room was much fresher and lighter than the windowless hotel rooms of old. This meant packing much more lighting gear into a compact area. Having a big window backdrop behind the judges also helped. But when is window not a window?
Answer - When it’s a 16m x 4m video wall supplied by Anna Valley displaying a perfectly chosen urban setting for each city location.
“The challenge was to make it look as ‘real’ as possible” remarks Tom. “The brightness of the screens in the background meant that I had to have enough punch up front. And that’s why I opted for a boxed truss solution which allowed plenty of ‘get-out-of-jail’ fixtures to re balance brightness as required”

It's a shame they're not using the 'windows' again this year as they worked well in the different locations last year. Hope they have a brand new set for the live shows this year too as the current one is starting to look a bit tired. Would be interesting if they switched back to the wider set up they had from series 3 to 5.
