I went to one of last years auditions and the judges have a list of 5 songs that the contestant has prepared. The contestants say which song they want to sing, and the judges agree/disagree to that, if they disagree they suggest another one off their list.

I went to the London auditions this year and there were two notable moments that suggested they don't bring 5 seconds:

The first was when a man sang something and Gary asked if he had anything more "upbeat" and then boy was a bit flustered and Gary said "you were going to do Jessie J for us" and the boy said "oh yeah" and then Gary said "I think we need a second song, what do you have for us?" and the boy said "Jessie J".

And the second was a man who was really, really awful. I think he sang Night Fever in a fake Bee-Gees voice. Really woeful stuff. Off the back of it, the judges didn't say anything at all, didn't laugh, didn't comment on his
song, nothing - and then just went "let's hear the other one, Tragedy." and he sang Tragedy in the same style. Straight off the back of his second performance the judges were in hysterics, laughing at how bad he was.

Anyway, both of those suggest to me that the acts had only brought two songs. I can't think of any reason why they'd need to bring 5 songs anyway, it's all scripted how the audition plays out.

If she didn't want to sing a Pink song she didn't have to.

Well what happened here, clearly, is that the producers told her "We really believe you're a star. We'll have you go out and do a Pink so, and the judges will say you're amazing but want to hear a different song, and it will be euphoric when you sing a different song - it'll be a fantastic story, a real triumph, everyone will love you."

It will have been made very clear to her that she HAD to sing a Pink song, or not perform at all. The fact that they misled her about the reaction is the exploitative bit.

At the end of the show the other night Dermot said something like "for more information visit the following website" with itv.com/xfactor at the bottom of the screen. Was this replaced by the STV and UTV sites in those areas? It seemed a bit odd as they normally read the address out.

I noticed during the competition they did list stv.tv and u.tv and they weren't read out.

Maybe it all part of ITV being nicer to STV/UTV since the court case? I have notice there really is no longer any real opt outs anymore.

Noticed though the competition could be entered via the STV and UTV website too.

It's interesting you say that. The auditions I went to saw some fairly good acts (that were never shown) go through their song lists with the judges and choose a song together. Some acts were given their own choice and interrupted shortly into it whilst the judges picked another song for them off their list. But the key difference here is that they were good acts who knew why they were there and how they would be coming across.

It could also simply be that I went to the 2011 auditions and you went to the 2012 auditions where they've changed the format/rules.

is this year's show genuinely so bad that nobody has commented on it for two weeks? Or should I be looking in the ITV News rota thread?

I don't think TV Forum is the place where you discuss the actual content of The X Factor, it never has been.

The X Factor USA premiere is next week, and one interesting new feature is the revamped categories making TXFUSA the only show in worldwide XF brand to do so.

Demi Lovato will mentor the 12-16 year olds.
Britney Spears will mentor the 17-24 year olds.
Simon Cowell will mentor the groups.
LA Reid will mentor the over 25s.

Therefore there is no separating the sexes, each category will be mixed.
