"Simon Cowell reverses his decision to autotune contestants", surely?

The following is from the BBC News online version of the story:

---
"We do not use, and never have used, audio technology that would unfairly reflect any singer's original performance on The X Factor," a spokeswoman said.

"In line with standard television practice, sound processing filters are used to remove background noise on our pre-recorded shows."
---

Is she lying? After all, the product is called Auto-Tune, not Noise-Filter. ITV just get worse and worse, and incapable of accepting blame.

(In the interests of full disclosure, auto correct was switched on when I composed this reply)

I think the re-tune and what they said about the normal editing process is quite just in the way it ensures the viewers get the best quality. It is a little absurd as you would "hear" the singing and you want it to be as pure as possible but I suppose it's for the viewers benefit?

Benefit the viewer how? Hearing a pitch perfect song for "entertainment only" is one thing - so wouldn't be out of place on Tonight's the Night.

But for a singing competition that operates a premium vote line and nets them millions of pounds a series? Er...

Daily Express posted:
“Critics suggest the rot may have set in during series six.

That was when contestants were first required to perform their initial audition before a microphone, which would make manipulation easier.

That's something of a red-herring. Microphones have always been in use, otherwise the viewer wouldn't hear anything.

The difference is that they used to hang a boom over their head instead of having a mic on a stand in front of them.

You can autotune either.

Agreed but if that's the way they want to fight the case it does make sense in some way. I guess it just means that when they perform on the live show they had better be up to scratch Very Happy

That pre-supposes that they haven't used auto-tune in the live shows previously. Whilst not as easy to conceal, its perfectly possible to run the process on a live performance - and of course by the time the live shows come about they've got fairly competent singers in the mix, so the effect would be much more subtle.

As a rule I personally don't watch the show. It just doesn't do anything for me, and I'm more than occupied with other things on a Saturday night. It so happened that I saw it last week, and it was as plain as anything that it [auto-tune] was in use.

From my casual perspective, the show seems to thrive on controversy, gossip and the permanent drip feeding of intrigue to the press.

So good luck to them. Its not as if I've ever paid a penny to their vote lines.

This may sound stupid but do they fix it when they are on stage or back the the studios the autofix and will this weeks have it.

Autotune was added in the post-production stage, the judges heard singers naturally. And no it won't be on this week's episode because its standard practice to edit episodes a week in advanced.

Autotune can be utilised live from the sound desk backstage (the desk is more likely to be out front in the auditorium); but that relies on them having loaded up all of the songs they will hear that day (so the software knows what notes should be sung and can adjust accordingly).

But that's a rough and ready way to do it.

Just had an update from ITV scheduling and the episode of The X-Factor scheduled for Sat 28th Aug (episode 2) has been replaced by episode 3.

Also says details of new episode 3 still being reviewed.

Couldn't care less really about the Autotune issue - it's this woman who's been axed which is more of a concern. Not her mental health, but the mental health of those who believe she was good enough to even make it past the first audition.
