Yes they were 1 minute over by the time Louis had made his decision so they really cut Dermot's chat with Treyc as well as his closing link. There wouldn't have been time for Deadlock without contacting ITV1 Pres for an extension.
They (and the viewer) want to see judges having to choose between their own acts, and they obviously didn't want to risk the result already being known as it was a few weeks ago with Simon.
However, I do think they should have gone left to right instead so Cheryl would be third to choose. In that position last night it would have been one all, and even if it was 2-0 she could vote the opposite way to try and at least send it to Deadlock - but by not voting last it means she couldn't force deadlock either way.
I suspect though Cheryl may have been more willing to vote had it been Rebecca or Cher there - both Katie and Treyc were dispensable really and I suspect Cheryl wouldn't have been too bothered if both had gone.
Cheryl should have just voted for the act she felt gave the worst performance - its was slightly ridiculous that she wouldn't vote when both SImon and Louis have voted in the past for their acts.
Predictably after last night's shows there's people wanting to complain to OFCOM that the show's fixed. Sounds like controversy on a par with Britains Got Talent the other year, and will presumably get thrown out.
I'm assuming the (official) reason for deciding to have a majority judges vote instead of going back to Cheryl was due to them running out of time, particularly as she had stated she would send it to deadlock.
I noticed the end credits were very short consisting of about two slides, which would back up them being out of time.
I assume they couldn't overrun due to the Xtra Factor waiting to start on ITV2, though this hasn't stopped other live shows from overrunning in the past (eg. Brit Awards).
Yeah I noticed that, they do normally have the full credits on the Sunday, so it must have been.

To my mind, it would have been more interesting (and potentially generated more media coverage) if the rule had been that Cheryl
must
vote as it is part of her role as a judge, or
both
of her acts would be eliminated. There's certainly more than enough contestants left to have made that work if she'd still declined.
In my eyes X Factor messed up, regardless of Cheryl's 'strop' as some may see it.
The issue is to do with consistency, and in the past when a judge has had two acts in the bottom two, they are the last to vote- which would either allow them to cast a majority, or send to deadlock. This is something that due to a lack of time, was not considered- even when pointed out by Cheryl (which in fairness she does sound surprised of the order of voting when Dermot calls her name), but surely in the event of live television, ITV and X Factor are aware of overrunning and consider transparency to be a high priority.
I remember when Sharon Osbourne refused to vote in the bottom two as both were her acts, yet she was far more instant and actually stood away from the desk out of shot, which therefore left the judges with the only option of a majority vote of three.
In an ideal world the judges would vote off one of their acts, but in realistic terms, only Simon would and has done this in the past. In all honesty, many are perceiving this as producers trying to manipulate the results, and you can't blame them considering Katie has stayed despite public reaction to her.
I always feel that the 'bottom two' situation on the Sunday show is far too rushed (and always has been, even in the Kate Thornton days). For me it makes for slightly uncomfortable viewing and although it builds the tension a little it would be nice to give the whole section a couple of extra minutes to hear the judges reasons without Dermot rushing them along.
Cutting the overly long intro down or ditching the god awful group performance would give them a bit of extra time, I reckon.
I hope I'm not the only one that thinks this has been blown up out of all proportion? Pretty ridiculous really, as the sensational headline on this article goes to show...

Yes of course. I'm not clear exactly what happened but I think everyone needs to realise that the programme generates a 'controversy' every week just to get it in the papers. As long as The X Factor is on the front pages of Monday's papers Simon Cowell is happy. Get it on the front on Tuesday and Wednesday or longer and he's ecstatic!
It's just an entertainment show, nothing to take too seriously

Dermot's words quoted in the Daily Mail are...
Quote:
'We thought it
might
happen before the break when we found out who was in the bottom two,’ he said.
'We decided
if
she wasn’t going to vote, we would go to the majority verdict.’
...that merely implies the producers thought it might happen so had decided would they would do if Cheryl didn't vote. He didn't say that it was decided Cheryl wouldn't vote, which from reading the headline you might assume.
EDIT: Dermot's clarified via twitter:
Quote:
Just thought I'd clear up the Sun story. Bless them. Wrong end of the stick, as always. No 'plot' as quoted... We never know which way the Judges are going to vote. Ever, the only thing I know is who's in the bottom 2 when I'm given the card. I don't know which judge to go to Until I'm called, and the judges, including simon, dont know the vote or who we're coming to next. Its that simple.
I assume there was a problem which delayed the start of Wagner's performance. For those who didn't see it after the his intro the camera cut to Dermot who was standing next to Louis, who asked Louis what he expected from the performance (essentially filling for about 20 seconds) before the start of the performance.
