My weekly thoughts on last night's show.

Overall, some of the acts did improve, however there was still far too much weakness to really call the show better. Also, this was Michael Jackson week - so where were all of the stompers like Bad, Thriller, Black or White, etc, that he's arguably more famous for? Ballads are an incredibly safe choice and I think we were masking lack of talent with slow songs last night. Anyway, thoughts individually:

Alexandra - Had throat problems this week and it showed, she was holding herself back. Even when she did try to do a belt though, she still sang from the back of her throat. It doesn't seem like she can take care of her voice, which is a pity, because when it's there it's very good.

Scott - Picked a safe ballad after last week's abortion, but for me the performance was very weak. It annoys me when Louis says that he "looks like a popstar". I can't help but think that he just looks a bit wet and drippy. An ok performance, but I can't really see how he justifies his place in the final 12.

Ruth - What an absolute travesty she was in the bottom two. Unfortunately I think a lot of people are just not classy enough to get Ruth. They shouldn't really listen to Simon's comments. She can't do anything right in his eyes - but it was nice to hear her sing something non-Hispanic. The version of Purple Rain she sang was outstanding and she gave it absolutely everything, and I was glad to see her back.

Girlband - Another one of the weaker acts, and the one which deserved to be out of the competition. At times it was like listening to four solo singers trying to be agroup, and it reminded me of a band a few years ago singing 'Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now' in the week they got voted out. Cheesy, gimmicky, and had a place on Britain's Got The Pop Factor.

Laura - Oh my, this girl isn't very versatile is she? When she's singing piano it's rather like listening to someone who's trying to be a cross between Duffy and Amy Winehouse. Her pronunciation style is just awful. When she belts, her voice is oppressive and has a very unattractive vibrato. This song did nothing for her apart from look like another Peter Kay choreography.

Austin - Horrible arrangement. They had the opportunity to do a real footstomper here and just didn't take it. As a result, what came across was a very odd combination of rock with pop that didn't really work. I'd like to see him stick to the melody rather than doing all of the vocal acrobatics around it.

Daniel - Very pub singer-ish. Nothing remarkable about the song, and nothing remarkable about him. His sob story is saving him, however.

JLS - Probably the best performance of the night. They took one of my favourite MJ songs and did an absolutely fantastic performance of it. My only problem with it was the handheld units - could they not have headset mics instead? Then Brian could have experimented a bit more with the choreography. The mics just got in the way.

Diana - I just don't get this girl. Why does she sing from her throat like Dido? Why does she flick her voice up after some of the notes (and it was BADLY noticeable last night)? Why does she walk around barefoot (and NO, it's not because she might slip, whatever she says). She's trying to be really edgy and earthy but she just looks like a Musical Theatre reject. I don't like her I'm afraid, and wish that she would be voted off.

Rachel - I think she's absolutely right, that you shouldn't just stick to your comfort zone and that you should try other stuff. The true measure of the X Factor is whether you can turn your hand to any song. She did a powerful version of the song tonight and I enjoyed her performance.

Eoghfzqwan - Predictable song, predictable performance. Wouldn't have been surprised if they'd put him on wires and made him fly. The Connie Talbot of the competition.

Also, I'm sick of comments about Rachel's "attitude". It is nice to see someone who can think independently and who can do stuff off her own back, and to see someone who has obviously done things wrong in her life but is now turning it around and thanking God every day that she's a better person. I absolutely love her as a singer and she's got a great personality - so can we drop all of this "attitude" rubbish?

I don't know what the week theme is next week, but I hope it's not more ballads. I know that post was a little Tumbly Wumbly, sorry!

It's Big Band next week, which usually turns into a disaster.

Although the live shows this year are more awfully over-produced than ever (kill the voiceover, kill those awful intro sequences to each act), I would say there is more strength in depth this year than ever before.

The "overs" can be ruled out, but I think any of the other acts could still win it. JLS are probably the best group since The X Factor, but if anything Louis will be their downfall. I still think Scott is the dark horse of the competition, while Austin was much improved on last week - and Eugeon is more than capable of winning it if Simon Cowell wants him too.

It's the girls though that really stand out - traditionally the weakest of the group, this year they are probably the three strongest in the competition - and all offer something different too. Diana is probably my favourite at the moment though.

Eoghan has the weakest voice and hopefully won't make it too much further. If you were to watch him sing with the volume off, you'd think he's belting out a high note! I think I'd want Austin and Laura (or Alexandra!) in the final. I like Diana but I don't think her voice will be popular enough to carry her through to the final. I was sad to see Ruth in the bottom two, can't wait for Daniel to go. I don't think JLS are all that great, not at the moment anyway.

There's nothing you can say about Rachel that she probably hasn't already said about herself. It's OK sticking up for yourself, but she's just a bit too in-your-face and sarcastic with her comments back to the judges. I liked her to begin with, but she's just a bit of a nightmare now.

I think Brian spoils it a lot of the time by getting the act to walk about and do silly things, it doesn't feel natural at times. There's just a bit too much of it at times.

Yes, Big Band next week, and the finalists will unveil their charity single, Heroes.

On a rather amusing note, Leon Jackson only made it to number 3 in the charts being beaten by Geraldine at number 2 and Pink at number 1.

Charts are in... X Factor winner Leon Jackson at number 3, BGTPF winner Geraldine at number 2, P!nk at number 1.

JAH-Im sorry, I Think you mispelled Eoghan, because thats the correct irish way.

And I'm afraid I completly disagree with you on the subject of Diana, she was by far the best (along with Austin) and she is new and not the same old talent show star, she could win!

And by far the worst performance was by Rachel this week, I agree with being versitile, but twice now has she f*cked up, and she should really be voted out, as Girlband were.

I do agree that Ruth being in the bottom two was extremely bad, and I do think we listen to much to Simon!

Worst first single showing for an xFactor contestant or even Pop Idol isnt it? Shows you the quality of the acts last year, I didnt think it'd be this good a single actually but guess we won't be having a Bleeding Love for a while.

Sorry Joan, I was attempting humour at the odd Irish spelling of some names (Eoghan for Owen, Niamh for Nieve, Louis for Tosspot).

I just think Diana's trying way too hard. The whole Bride of Chucky face, the hand gestures, the styling - it's like Sandie Shaw attempting to be indie.

I think people are just waiting for Rachel to do something wrong because they've got a problem with her personality. The thing is, the X Factor is NOT about what someone's like as a person. It is a talent compeititon to find a pop star and a recording artist. If it was Personality Idol, I would understand it, but it's just dull.

Oh, and Deadlock got a fair few laughs this week too.

Hang on, hang on. This IS a singing competition, right?

Why on earth did they have all the contestants MIME the charity single?

Is it too much to have them rehearse their own song for the week AND their line of Hero?

I know they'll want the official charity release to sound its best, but it just felt wrong that none of it was done live.

Tut.

I'm surprised anyone takes this shower of **** of a TV programme seriously anymore. It jumped the shark years ago.

Did Daniel & Ruth sing on the Finalist single Hero. I didn't see them perform.

Well well. Scott and Daniel in the bottom two. Firstly Nige and his session musicians did wonders this week and reminded me why live music is so important (and I've said this every time they've come on - why can't they get an orchestra in permanently? They aren't that strapped for cash as they're offering an obscene £50,000 prize to a competition winner).

Would have preferred to see whiney runt Diana and dull-as-dishwater Eoghzdfwan in the bottom two, but I suppose the muppets who vote chose.
