It's as if they were struggling for a sob story, and given there were no personal tragedies in her life they could feature, they thought they'd exploit the misery of her local community instead.
And I don't believe for a moment it was her idea to feature this.
Oh I think it probably was. Otherwise you'd be relying on a 20 something year old researcher/runner to have a knowledge of the ghoulish history of that particular town - and I doubt they would.
Its more likely to have been an answer to the, "Why do you think you should win the X-Factor?" question on the application form.
