Don't see how that follows - aren't the voting lines open all week

Nope.

Actually, SCD's voting lines are open all week. X Factors aren't.

And having them sing the same song just showed how much better Shane was!

Rubbish. Shayne is not a better singer than Andy. They're both excellent and there's not much in it. I do feel rather sorry for Andy - that song they both sung is was far more suited to Shayne so it's not really a massive surprise to me that he ended up winning it for that reason alone.

Having said that Shayne was always the favourite and an obvious winner, although I was rather hoping we might get a Pop Idol 1 style scenario when everyone expected Gareth Gates to win and in fact Will Young took it at the end.

So X Factor becomes the only show of this kind in the UK to get a 3rd series. I wonder if the judges will be the same? I think they should swap round Ben Shepperd and Kate Thornton!

Watching the X-tra Factor last night, all the judges seemed to indicate they'd be back.

Best bit was when all those freak shows from the auditions came back for that song. Fabulous.

As for Ben, he gets to present Soapstar Superstar with Fern Britton in January. Rolling Eyes

I have to admit I've gone off Kate Thornton. I think this is because she is an Acme Host-o-matic Robot (TM).

It's as if when someone says "time up on this" in her ear she is programmed to abruptly cut the person off and push them off stage while shouting and looking cross as opposed to gently bringing the thing to some kind of conclusion with a natural flow.

They need to get Ant and Dec to host it if they want to beat SCD next year.

According to the BBC...

Performances/Dances:
Strictly Come Dancing - 10.4 million
The X Factor - 9.2 million

Results:
Strictly Come Dancing - 10 million
The X Factor - 9.3 million

An estimated 20 million people watched either final and 16 million votes were cast between the two. Though I've heard talk of some newspapers saying The X Factor got 13 million viewers and Strictly Come Dancing got 12 million; this can't be right, as I doubt the BBC would be wrong, but who knows.

I doubt the papers today will have got the overnight figures - so I don't know what they are basing their stories on.

The BBC Online site quotes the average audience (which is the figure usually used for a programme), whilst it could be the papers are quoting the highest 15 minute peak, as most ratings are also available in 15 minute lumps as well as averages.

I'd be surprised if the papers got access to BARB figures in time to go to press though, as I thought BARB had to wait for an overnight BARB-Box download in the early hours of the morning to get the ratings data for the previous day, which then gets processed and turned into the overnights. These are not final figures, as they are consolidated with VCR/PVR and qualifying repeat viewing.

(For instance - I watched both SCDs live and Tivo-ed X Factor - though didn't bother watching the X Factor results show. Once Brenda was out, there was little interest left for me to be honest)

It makes sense.

In their infinite wisom, ITV scheduled the final for the same night that half the working population of the country would be out on Christmas nights out. I know that's certainly why I missed it.

The slightly older demographic for Strictly Come Dancing would be more likely to stay in, and therefore more likely to remain loyal to the show.

The papers wouldn't have the overnight figures - but I do.

Averaging the course of the main programmes, Strictly Come Dancing has a consistent audience of over 10M though the programme with the exception of one quarter where it's just under 10M. X Factor only rises above 10M in one quarter hour - however - X Factor's peak audience VERY narrowly beats Strictly Come Dancing by around 300,000 - which is in itself a figure within the margin of error!

For the results shows, SCD's peak audience beats X Factor's by 1.2 million (10.5 v 9.3), possibly because some of the younger X Factor audience may have gone out by then.

You make a headline out of that!

Last night's total viewing for the five main channels peaks at 26.5 million at 2145.

Thanks for that marksi.

So X Factor peaked slightly higher than SCD peaked in terms of quarter hour audience, but across the entire show SCD outrated it on average.

Worth pointing out that the BBC raised significant amounts for Children in Need from the SCD votings, The X Factor income presumably made significant amounts for ITV or SyCo?

That actually kinds of annoys me. With SCD it's fine as the celebs do it for charity, but every phone vote (e.g. Sports Personality) the BBC give 15p to a nominated charity (either CIN, Comic Relief or Sport Relief!). I think the BBC should either charge 10p per vote - or use the money as an alternative revenue source for the BBC, as the commercial channels do!

But surely giving the money to charity is a far better cause than giving the BBC more funding?

It's also a further incentive for people to call in, if they know the money is going to a good cause. The BBC would surely get a lot of bad press if they stopped doing this.
