What did everyone think of this tonight?

From a presentation point of view the studio looks great, and I also think Kate makes an excellent presenter, better than Ant and Dec on Pop Idol. I also like it that the judges come up to the stage after one of their acts has sung.

The ones that stood out for me tonight were G4 (from Louis group), Steve and Rowetta (both from Simon's group. I also thought Verity was very good and Louis was downright rude to her when he gave his opinion. I dont really like anyone from Sharon's group although I do think Sharon is great on the show!

There is also a bit of a twist in the voting tonight, the public vote for their fave then the 2 with the lowest amount of votes have to sing again and the judges will decide who has to go.

Only caught the last half hour or so, never seen it before. Liked it though, agreed about Kate being a great presenter. Still a bit of needle between her and Simon I noticed ("Ladies first.......Simon!").

One weird thing, which I've noticed previously on Pop Idol, is the sudden drop in audio quality.

Tonight it happened during the recap at the end of the programme, it sounded like the circuit had switched to one with lower spec, very noticable on the applause as the treble seemed very attenuated, almost like a cheapo ISDN link.

This effect persisted during the ads in the following junction as well, so I don't think it was a studio fault. I didn't have a chance to check if the audio went from stereo to mono at the same time. Same effect on both DSAT and analogue.

Anyone else hear this?

The studio was fantastic - a non-traditional lay-out as well.

The only thing I don't like is the emphasis on the competition between the judges. Although the banter was very good tonight, the real battle is between the contestants.

However, ironically Simon said tonight the public aren't judging the judges - but in all the pre-show hype that's what The X Factor was about.

Having a category each is fine, but it should be more like Popstars: The Rivals, which had a battle between the judges, which was secondary to the main competition.

I also like the Xtra Factor having a view down to the studio...

Er, but this is very BBC... is it BBC LDN that has like a little bar?

And I think it is turning into "The Cowells" with every member of the Cowell family doing something. His girlfriend interviewing people...

And Simon's brother was being interviewed as well... very nice. Now to make it even, I want Ozzy swearing as he trips over a dog bowl. Lol, apart from that I think this is better than Pop Idol and Popstars combined. Smile

The studio is absolutely brilliant. The music is very impressive as well. Its a bit annoying how Kate has to do that 'dramatic silence' when announcing who's staying and going EVERY SINGLE TIME. Very Happy

And will the judges not be biased towards their own 'students'? It seems a bit odd.

That results show was so good, I loved the way they did it.

I think it was always inevitable that Louis and Sharon were never going to send their act home so the decision was always going to be Simons.

Roberta wasnt the worst act, but im glad G4, Steve, Rowetta and Verity are through to next weeks show.

The twist in the voting was good - but not for this competition. It would work far better when judges are "neutral". I think it be better if after the performances each judge nominated one of their acts to face the public vote and possible boot.

However, The X Factor didn't escape the flaw that affects most talent shows - those who perform first get less votes!

Someone has to go first, so they can't do much about it. The only thing they could do is reverse the order they give the numbers.

Yes Louis mentioned this on the ITV2 show - it could be a point they need to reconsider.

I voted for Rowetta and Steve - Rowetta has by far the best voice out of all the finalists. I think either Simon or Louis will win this, most of their acts are really good, the only one of Sharon's that was any good was the one which went tonight, and she wasnt that good.

Even though Tabby (i think that's how u spell it) seems to have a good chance of winning, even though i don't personally think he should.

Didn't like it all I'm afraid - the whole thing felt a bit "cheap"...

The studio looked good superficially - but the lighting, set and screens started to look a bit like "Pop Idol on the cheap" after a few minutes. I'm afraid I only survived until Verity sang - then I flipped over to Celebrity Come Dancing - much improved over the first series.

I'll probably go back to the X Factor next week to give it another chance - I Tivo-ed it this week and fast-forwarded it through all of Kate Thornton's bits. Can't stand her as a presenter - not a patch on Ant and Dec IMHO.
