I think the only chance Millionaire has now is if the jackpot is increased and its back in a nightly half hour slot. Perhaps 8.00 after Corrie.
Although times have changed. You can bet your life that if the Millionaire phenomenom started now, it would be, more American-ised, hosted by Ant and Dec and there would be no fixed central seating hotspot.
Part of what made Millionaire special is the fact it was still counted in the traditional British gameshow format.
ITV1 quiz show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? may face the axe, host Christ Tarrant has revealed.
Tarrant tells the Sun: "The show's being going for nine years... next year is our 10th anniversary and we may play about with it... or it might be a good place to stop."
The show has suffered falling ratings, starting out in 1998 with 13m viewers. Now the audience is just over 3m.
With Millionaire possibly facing the axe, Chris Tarrant has already secured another hosting job - for The great Pretender.
The new show will broadcast five times a week in the teatime slot and take on Noel Edmonds' Deal Or No Deal on C4.
Tarrant says he'd like to stay with Millionaire if ITV decides to keep it. Other options include moving it from its Saturday slot.
Saying "10 years....might be a good place to stop" is no where near confirmation that it will be axed. Since when did Teletext turn into The Sun?
It's no surprise really - it's was pushed out of the Autumn slot by Afterlife (though that's now been axed), and then out of the winter slot by Pokerface and Primeval.
It be good for it to reach the 10 year milestone, but I wouldn't want to see it have a long(er) and lingering death.
Rescheduling might help - I think running it Spring/Simmer rather than the more competitive Autumn/Winter might improve it's performance as it's one of those shows you watch if there is nothing else on.
I've also said in the past a Friday night slot could work as an alternative to the latest crap comedy on BBC1 - perhaps Millionaire at 8.30pm followed by one of ITV's US imports at 9.30pm.
Weekdays - I don't see it being viable in the long term, though in a half hour slot it probably would give away about the same each day as Deal or No Deal - but I don't think they'd get the revenue to cover it like they used too.
Apparently, Millionaire bosses are going to be conducting auditions for the next series, in a hope that the contestants will be more interesting! The successful applicants will then be invited to an interview!
Could be a good idea - but WWTBAM is straying from its roots if it has to do this to keep people watching - I think a different set, slightly remixed music and a few tweaks to the game would be a better option myself. :

The Sun have changed their tune then. Are they forgetting that they reported it was being axed back at the start of this thread!
It's worth remembering that The Sun did sponsor WWTBAM for the frist series or 2 then got dumped after over the Sophie Rhys Jones topless photos saga (Chris Tarrant was involved because the photos were taken by his then co-presenter at a Capital Radio party)
Dumped for a new sponser with Jacob's Cream Crackers. I remember the Daily Mirror were comparing both companies back then stating Cream Crackers had more taste than The Sun's articles.
