ITV1 quiz show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? may face the axe, host Christ Tarrant has revealed.

Tarrant tells the Sun: "The show's being going for nine years... next year is our 10th anniversary and we may play about with it... or it might be a good place to stop."

The show has suffered falling ratings, starting out in 1998 with 13m viewers. Now the audience is just over 3m.

With Millionaire possibly facing the axe, Chris Tarrant has already secured another hosting job - for The great Pretender.

The new show will broadcast five times a week in the teatime slot and take on Noel Edmonds' Deal Or No Deal on C4.

Tarrant says he'd like to stay with Millionaire if ITV decides to keep it. Other options include moving it from its Saturday slot.

It's one of them shows which just gets repetitive and has been going for too long. Okay, it's not as boring as 100% was on Channel 5 but gameshows need to have a bit more life.

These new teatime "gameshows" on ITV1 take the piss. There's no fun, it's just a confusing boring game.

Gameshows need to be fun again. I wouldn't mind Gameshow Marathon running EVERY week...

If they do decide to keep WWTBAM going after 10 years (5 at least in the wilderness) then where would they move it? Burying it in Sunday afternoons or mid-mornings before making it disappear without much warning would be the ITV thing to do I reckon.

It's about time it was rested. IMO it worked much better when it was on every night for a fortnight - it made it more into 'event TV', rather than having it on once a week.

Can I also just point out at this early stage, that anyone in this thread who says "We don't want to give you that", "Is that your final answer?", "Are you sure?", "Can I phone a friend" or indeed any catchphrase from the programme, in an attempt at being witty is a cretin. It wasn't even funny nine years ago.

We can be sure that if Millionaire is axed it won't be the last of it. They could also try and find a new host (like Greggles for example), and/or try a Who Wants To Be A Super Millionaire? like the Americans tried, with a top prize jackpot of £10 Million with two new lifelines like Three Wise Men and Double-Dip.

I think ITV might try Super Millionaire but it's about 5 years too late. They should try millionaire at 5pm daily on ITV1, the Weakest Link still does the business on BBC2 and thats well past its best

Would ITV really want to give away £1 million in a daytime slot though?

I used to enjoy Millionaire when it was on for half an hour and I think it was twice a week at 8pm towards the beginning of its life.

It was a great timeslot and I'd watch it again if they moved it back there.

You could tell it was on it's last legs when Tarrant arranged a personal lifeboat with his new daytime quiz...

Well they would have to make the questions a couple of Levels harder.

They've only given it away 5 times in 9 years so it's not too likely, they can just increase the difficulty of the questions or put more thick people on.

Plus they would make a fortune on people phoning in at £1 a go for competitions etc.
