]Since there's no Welsh language programmes, why do they need seperate announcers, when most programmes are the same as ITV1 in England?
And the S4C spelling error was an easy mistake. It's Welsh, not English remember, and their on screen ID has only ever referred to WaleS4Cymru.[/quote]
Indeed, why should it matter? You seem to forget for as long as theres been a Welsh franchise/race/people, I could go on, believe it or not you have to supply programmes for the Welsh people, because us Welsh are diffrent to you English, like it or lump it. Channel 3 (as well as the BBC have always recognised this, bless them, and so they should), and contrary to what you have said there is a diffrence between ITV 1 and ITV 1 Wales, so we should have some sort of diffrent continuity. The quota of regional programmes is much more in Wales than it is in England (I may be wrong, but I'll think you find the quota in Wales is more than the quota in Scotland), therefore our continuity is much more than the odd 2.30pm/7.30pm slot. We also need seperate annoncers because ( in the most basic of examples), how do you expect a London announcer to prounce "Welsh" placenames and words that are sometimes mentioned in previews for local programmes. Don't forget although the Welsh language has the same letter shapes as the English, the way the letters are pronounced, in most cases, are diffrent, and it does'nt matter weather you are Welsh speaking or not, there are still ways of pronouncing the words. The classic example is the placename YNYSYBWL, to the Engllish eye theres no hope in hells chance of pronouncing it properly because in English there are no vowels, yet in Welsh it's full of vowels, yet even to the non-Welsh speaker who has grown up in Wales they can still pronounce it properly because in school they have been taught the diffrence between English vowels and Welsh vowels.
With regard to Wales4Cymru, yes that was the on screen identity for S4C untill about 1987/MAYBE 1986. S4C has always been regarded as S4C or phonetically(sp?) ESS PEDWAR (roll the R as in Raspberry) ECK depending weather you were welsh speaking or not.
Just because we were given a fourth channel (and we are ever so grateful
), does not mean we should lose our "independence" or our own identity on channel 3, eventhough Granada/Carlton may wish so, yet don't forget one of Carlton's "Big Wigs" is a Welshman
