What examples of "They wouldn't get away with that today" can you think of? Here are mind...

1950s.
The Black and White Minstrel Show had white men blacking up.

1960s.
??

1970s.
Typical of quite a few sitcoms On the Busses had a black character called Chalky and most of the female characters were just a 'bit of skirt'. Stereotypes appeared in many shows, Mind your Lanuage being a good example.

The gameshow 321 gave fur coats, sun beds and even dogs as prizes.

1980s
Catchphrase always let the female select the cash value and holiday destination (in later series a coin was tossed before the show to decide if the male or female contestant got that honour).

In The Krypton Factor, the women got a head start on the obstacle course, even when it was a 20 something female fitness instructor verses a 50 year old male bank manager. In some series the age of the contestant was also taken in to account.

1990s
Endurance UK had white men blacking up.

2000s
What shows or concepts do you think we will look back on in 2027 in the same way as we view some of the things above?

X-Factor. Aren't we sometimes just laughing at people with mental illness?

Phone-in competitions on the BBC. If these don't come back, any old clips of Saturday morning kids television will seem odd in 2027.

We don't need to wait twenty years to say The X Factor promotes bullying and ego. Why not just rename it The Simon Cowell Show because that's what it is. The contestants are just a means to an end and the winners forgotten within 18 months.

Omg I'm not the only one who thought that then? It's not always mental ilness we're laughing at, a few weeks ago it was a physical disability. An old man who had some sort of mouth problem and hence couldn't talk. We were supposed to find that funny?

Why don't they go back to the old and trusted way of doing competitons - by POSTCARD!!! Just look back at all the memories of the Saturday morning shows both from ITV and BBC with the competition results and making a show of the wiiners being chosen from the many postcards. Even MOTD used to do the Goal of the month this way but now its even not being done - stopped due to the phone competitions being suspended by the Beeb!!!!

GO BACK TO POSTCARD ENTRIES!!!

yeah I laughed at that when I saw it on FTN recently, they would never be allowed to do that nowadays. The age thing possibly tho.

The X Factor maybe, but talent shows have been going on for years, the only difference here is the false hope they offer winners and abuse thrown at the losers

1. Postcards don't generate revenue;

2. Not environmentally friendly.

On a similar note, I recently e-mailed Teletext to ask why an e-mail alternative to texting was not provided for their TV Views page; and I suggested it was because text messages generated revenue. I never did get a reply, which suggests I hit the nail right on the head.

At the moment they are getting no revenue due to the suspension - so what's the difference! Plus they could keep that stamps for this years Blue Peter appeal!!!!!

I'm sure they don't get any revenue from text messages, it's just the phone company that gets the money.
