Really? I didn't know that! Must watch out for her....

Glad to hear you agree with me about Kathy as well, she was one of the warmest announcers on the ITV Network and it was a real shame when she left Tyne Tees for the final time (after being a presenter for a while). I think she does radio now.

Sorry Banksie ...are you equating the above to all southern announcers? or just tacking on southern as another adjective of derision?   Who are all 'the southern announcers' ? I hear a rich variety of accents on the BBC and C4/C5 these days and it doesn't bother me ...providing , as you say , they are friendly and informative...as for ITV ...southern for the btm end of the country ofcourse...and northern for the top end ...thats how it should be. If it isn't, it's hardlly the announcers' fault! I wouldn't expect to hear a Scottish accent on Meridian or Carlton, or a 'southern ' accent on Tyne Tees!

Dear Logiebaird or may I call you Log. Jason eluded to TTTV announcers trying to get rid of their North Eastern accents. My comments about Southerners was merley picking up on the fact that some in the North East would refer to 'people like me' as 'Soft Southerners'. So I was merely trying to be amusing, yet subtle, subtley amusing. A juxtaposition of prejudice and stereotyping with a little self depracation thrown in for good measure.

Hey! But you picked up on the important bit, well done.

Do you think Southerners can be patronising sometimes?

Hi Banksie - I prefer self belief to self deprecation any day ...!
Now ...as to southerners patronising?  I am one myself ...in my experience it's touchy northerners who find southerners patronising ..!!  So if you intended to patronise I shall overlook it on this occasion.....!
Are you exercising your tonsils on the airwaves currently?

Does Glenn Thompsett really exist or did someone just make him up?  Trish Bertram! Invite her and Charlotte Green (Radio 4 newsreader) to a party and only one of them will turn up.....think about it;)

Just a point - don't get this ...isn't Charlotte Green a posh radio 4 type ? don't think Trish Bertram is in the same bracket!

Logiebaird, us Southerners need to stick together! Charlotte Green, Trish Bertram - I was obviously flattering one of them as I implied they were one and the same -But I know who I'd most
like to get stuck in a lift with - pip, pip, pip (say no more!).

Haven't done any live TV work since 2nd January. Lots of other things, but no continuity. Being bad and Southern has it's downside. The up-side? One hour in a voice over box in London yesterday paid the same as two days continuity. More of that I think. I enjoy the continuity but also have a lazy streak a mile wide.Wink

So that people don't think I have it in for Geordies/similar - I don't, I think it's a warm, rich accent, which makes the 'Big Brother' gimp's plastic over-playing of it even worse - there are another two I can't stand, and I'm certain they are not Geordie!!!

I don't know the names, but one of them is a regular LWT announer and has another overly accentuated/over posh accent - a real 'Mr Voice-Over-Man'.

The other is heard occasionally across GMG - ludicrously on Border (Scotland) at times, especially when things go wrong, waffling-on about being 'Across Our Region' (as if he would know) - and EVERY weekend nighttime during those so obviuously pre-recorded announcements.

Crap.

i am not a great fan of that big brother announcer on channel 4 ... i think hes a mackem (wearside), and not a geordie(tyneside) - there is a difference ... and he makes my skin crawl everytime he speaks, as it is very accentuated.

its a shame because channel 4 have a good record of picking good announcers, with a sense of humour and personality like that guy who went there from central (i forget his name). i am not against announcers with regional accents - for example ch4 have a good announcer with an irish accent.

one announcer who gets on my wick sometimes (though she isnt the worst announcer in britain) is Ms Youngs at central, she has a habit of using the same script again and again, and the scripts are awful anyway, eg:
'coming up next, the itv evening news with reports from home and abroad' and 'now central news with the latest from our part of the region' god damn it woman!, its ok once, but again and again!

i hate the DJ style ITV Nighttime announcer - and i dont like maggie from what ive heard of her on tyne tees

on a lighter note, i like andy marriot - and both the guy that did the funny announcements on ch5 (think hes left) and the woman anno on 5 - she does some cheeky announcements, and she was good on ch5's 'good afternoon' strand (was that what it was called?, with mini 10min programmes?)

i am sure the overly perky itv nightime announcer is on prozac or something! if i hear him link into the itv morning news in his very inapprorpriate way i will scream - he mocks the viewer!

i like channel 5 announcers, they have a bit of personality, but then i loved the old sky -' part of the sky television network this is ...' classic!

Psssst! Come a little closer and I'll whisper a little announcer secret to you.

'Coming up next etc.....' Means 'I haven't found out who the ITN newsreaders are' and the other generic (not unique to Central) is the audio equivalent of shrugging your shoulders.

Being bland and generic is often not the fault of the announcer. It is the arrogance of some programme producers, they don't think continuity makes a difference, so why should they get any REAL information.

Any announcers reading this, here's part one of our fun things to do......Telephone a member of a programmes production team and say.

'I've some time to promote your programme later and obviously I also have time over the ident to do it justice. I want to give you the best chance of picking up viewers so tell me, why should people watch?' THEN SHUT UP!!

You'd be amazed how few people have an answer to that question. On the other hand, those who do have an answer really do give an announcer the power to draw viewers in...

(Please read in best Anne Robinson voice for maximum humour)
One way to make sure your next isn't the weakest link G'bye.

You know Banksey - if I were you I'd blow mine own trumpet abit more ! Who says you are bad? no one here as far as I can see.....! Keep telling people you are 'bad' and they will have no reason to disbelieve you. Conversely - believe you are good and the opposite applies. Have you offered your services to other ITV companies? (or any other channels , terrestrial or satellite?)

and why no more HTV? is this down to ITV 'rationalisation' ??

and what ever happend to your famous ad in Broadcast? and did it ever work for you?

Hope your tonsils are gainfully employed on the airwaves again soon!

More to the point who says I'm good? BLOW TRUMPET TIME!!!
Sydincated newspaper jounalists, Hollywood voice over agents (not joking), major league advertising agencies, my Mum, network documentary producers ITV and BBC, regional ITV producers, viewers, the majority of people on this forum (thank you), my bank manager, my agent, countless presentation controllers and promotions producers from Cape Town to Cardiff.
I could go on but I'll get hate mail....again.

Bad? Hah! I'm invincible!! Top of the world Ma' (James Cagney).

Now that was better out than in.

Broadcast ad'? The continuity one didn't work. No HTV for me, no idea why but then it's only been about six weeks and staff announcers can only go on holiday or fall ill so often. The former covers Wales as far as West continuity is concerned that doesn't exist anymore, hasn't since Jan 2000. Other companies? They all by now have heard who I am, where I am and how brilliant I am and as all roads lead to Rome I'll get the call sooner or later.

I officially on this forum spurn false modesty - Best announcer in the universe? BANKSEY!!! Best voice over this side of Pluto? BANKSEY!!! Best lover in the world? Awwww! Come off it two out of three ain't bad!!!
