Er...no. Look North thrashes Calendar by a margin of 10 percent. Calendar gets about 19 or 20 per cent while Look North has a massive 33 or more percent.
Oh yeah? They don't clash - I bet a lot of people watch both!

Calendar is always beaten by the BBC 6 o'clock news which tends to get about 30 percent...that figure rises for Look North.
I'm sure you're right - alot of people do watch both...but more watch Look North.

The Calendar theme and look is fab, the best version of the Calendar theme tune ever in my opinion. I like the set and the big screen, and the presenters work very well together. The only disappointment is the titles really, it's crying out for some shots from the region and could do with some in the background of the sub-opts as well.

I get the impression that Calendar's current look was meant to make it sort-of match the ITV network news (the blue and red colour-scroll background).

But only a couple of months later, ITV network news changed the red portion to yellow - therefore undermining Calendar's revamp. Was there no way of Calendar knowing that ITV News had that one up their sleeve? (And therefore they could have somehow allowed for it)???

Looks like we agree. And they should involve the chevron in some way - it doesn't even appear on the final slide, they don't use an endcap.

Most of the current ITV regional news themes (those that I've actually heard and/or remember) are rather poor IMHO.

I'd be very interested to hear the theme tunes of Central News (East) and Central News (south) - and, indeed, just generally see those shows.

Thinking about it, I suppose I must like London Today/Tonight's theme, and Westcountry News/Live's because I'm forever humming them. Although I preferred the previous Westcountry News theme tune.

Westcountry had the same tune (albeit remixed, re-edited etc several times over the years) from 01/01/93 to the introduction of the current theme. I have no preference for one particular mix, I just generally liked their original theme. I also preferred Meridian's original news theme to the current one. And the Central News (West) theme immediately before the current one was excellent, whereas the current one is sh*te IMHO (but marginally less sh*te than Anglia's).

I don't like Central News East's - can't put my finger on what it is I don't like about it though.:

Because it's bland and faceless Razz

Seriously, Central News East has had some great themes in the past, but the current one is just dreadful. No heart to it, if you see what I'm getting at.

Calendar, always, and probably will carry on doing so, thrash Look North in the ratings. When you consider the enormous amount of resources poured into the programme, you can see why (six area offices, four camera crews in Leeds alone, multiple local news agents together with a permanent news centre on Kirkstall Road, no stuffy newsroom here you know!)

The theme is catchy and titles are both colourful and informative. The presenter line up is excellent (no Christa Ackroyd, for a start) and Duncan has come on leaps and bounds - an excellent choice, comfortable with the viewers and knowledgeable.

Prehaps those of you who disagree would like to take a look at the BBC offering. It rambles for about six minutes of news, no local split (OK so Hull now has it's own programme, but surely it doesn't need 30 minutes?) and then twenty two minutes of pap. Harry Gration is a consumate professional but as for the female, she is a pain and an instant turn off. I never liked her on Calendar (bring on Marilyn Webb).

The BBC likes to think it is THE news organisation, it's not. The ITV companies at local level do it much better.

Errrm, Look North beats Calendar in the ratings hands down I'm afraid!

Apaprently it swung back to Calendar just after the re-launch, but everyone went back to Look North when the realised that Christa hadn't in fact returned to YTV! Laughing

I think the current Central West theme is a pretty good one - but has been let down by the criminally short mix they use of it and to the "rebrand" that came with it just didn't do it justice. Some proper titles instead of just zooming into an N would be nice!

Disagree about the Calendar theme - I think it's a great little theme and in the current climate of just dumping anything remotely traditional and longstanding I'm glad they've kept the theme and beefed it up. Titles and short bulletin CSO studios need a bit of work - and the old OB thing is getting a bit boring now...Christine and Duncan are such a great pairing - why keep them apart!? Anyway - this was about themes and I like the theme so that's all that matters. Very Happy

But surely the best theme ever on ITV has to be the Central News West theme from 1997 - if you haven't heard it get over to TV-Ark and listen to it because I don't think they'll ever beat that overall look again.

CN South, Grampian, Westcountry and London are quite nice. But those last two have certainly done better.

HTV News is terrible, those awful trumpets annoy me amazingly, can't wait to see them go.
I believe, after London Tonight, HTV News has the longest running current look, and is just *v* poor compared to previous efforts, especially the last Wales Tonight era.

ITV regional news doesn't seem to breed the same number of 'icons' as BBC regional news does, for some region. I think that's true almost across the country.

I actually LIKE the trumpets! *shock*

You instantly know that HTV News is starting and they work pretty well!

I didnt like the Wales Tonight 'look' and thought it was very cheap looking especially with that cso background - the camera might have moved slightly but the background never did - or sometimes the wrong image would be superimposed! I hated it!

The orange/mustard look was ok and the current one is not much of a departure from the current look but more blue and yellow!

I actually quite like HTV Wales news, they have very nice, innovative graphics which work well together.

Worst has *got* to be Central News East. The titles look like they should be for Big Brother, and the music, whilst starting off nicely, just goes all wrong towards the end and ultimately ends up sounding rather poor.

As for Calendar - I can't get over how fab it is!!! The studio is gorgeous and I think the titles and music are incredibly nice. If Granada Reports gets a revamp, as is rumoured, I hope they borrow a lot of ideas from Calendar.
