I hated the Border ident when the generic hearts came along. They didn't keep their logo so it was simply "Border" written in italics on a moving blue background. Terrible.
Perhaps, after 38 years, the local Chinese restaurant in Carlisle wanted their "Chopsticks" back......

Border's was a static caption right up until 1989.
STV rebranded itself in 1985 as "Scottish Television" in an attempt to update its image. They could never quite make up their mind as to how to package their news, as the titles and music changed virtually every year right up until 1990. I can remember the news being introduced by a series of pips during 1984!

so there Updated them self again by going BACK to STV???
Yes, that looked fantastic on screen; I couldn't believe it only lasted for a week as it was far superior to the regular ident. If only they had spent a little more time on the regular ident, OK we would of had to suffer C3NE for a few more weeks but they may have ended up with a better TTTV identity.

One can only hope they do something like this when Tyne Tees is 50 in 2009.. Can't see it happening though..

In an ideal world...
Realistically we'll hopefully be treated to a regional news report, along the lines of:
'50 years ago today, Tyne Tees Television first started broadcasting to the North East of England from its studios in City Road, Newcastle.'
Que 'Tyne Tees Television Channel 8' ident.
<insert Tyne Tees history, programmes, etc. here>
Next an 'isn't an unified ITV network great' segment:
'Today, ITV1 is the only truly regional TV station bringing high quality programming to viewers everyday of the week.'
Then, if we dream hard enough, a montage of classic TTTV idents-oh dear I seem to have wavered towards unrealism there!

In fairness though, the ITV hearts idents of November 1999 were over a year late. They would have debuted along with the new ITV logo the previous year, but the inability of Carlton, Granada and UNM to agree on the design held up the project, leading eventually to (IMO greatly inferior) re-edits used by Granada/UNM (with Border and HTV - at the time still independent - coming along for the ride), and Carlton going their own way.
The re-hashed TTTV ident was not intended to last as long as it did; indeed it may only have been made when the delay became apparant. Had things gone to schedule it's quite possible that there would've been a straight change from C3NE to ITV hearts, without the intermediate ident at all.

I think you'll find that Tyne Tees has allready had it's 50th birthday; as of September 2005, ALL ITV stations were 50 years old. There was never a time when some parts of the country had ITV and some didn't. And down in the south west, Westcountry absolutely did not make a programme called 40 years of ITV in 2001, 4 years before looking back at 50 years of ITV within the regional news.

If you'd had that, with IVC and without the conflicting ITV branding alongside, in 2000 it would have been the best look the station had had in years.
Pity it was underused.
What I don't understand though, is *why* it was ever made. It wasn't just an ident, it was a complete presentation set and a new corporate logo. Why do that in 2000 when it was clear that regional identity was never coming back and when from day 1 the ident was never going to be in mainstream use? Was nice though, along with the final 'pre five' C5 look, I'd say it's the best presentation set made this century.

Well for the first 10 years of it's life, the shorthand way of referring to London Weekend Television was 'London Weekend'. 'LWT' was not used until the late 70's and was not in mainstream use as the station's brand until the mid-80's.
