I hated the Border ident when the generic hearts came along. They didn't keep their logo so it was simply "Border" written in italics on a moving blue background. Terrible.

OK we all remember the great identities of regional ITV (and we all wish they would return) but this thread is dedicated to the turkeys that somehow managed to get into the mix.

So roll up and list your top 3 most awful ITV regional idents that should never have been allowed on TV.

In three: Anglia Knight

Not necessarily bad, and a much stronger symbol than some of the tripe on screen today, but it looks so cheap.

In two: Carlton Central

Who ate my Cake? Was it you, Carlton?

And Bully's not-so-special prize: Channel 3 North East

The infamous C3NE ident which took an afternoon to make. Nonsense, they made it during their lunch break.

I'm with you on the 1st one but the other two-WHAT?Those are fantastic!

Surely you jest? The Central ident was dreadful especially compared to what went before it and the C3NE was just as bad although I probably disliked it more because of what it symbolised (the destruction of TTTV).

I didn't actually mind the 1998 Central ones, simple and easily adaptable to different situations. Saying that I like a lot of Lambie-Nairn's work, and the 1999 Carlton ones are really nice too. The last 1997 Central cake idents were very much an improvement on some of the previous ones, but the music let them down. Central however was very much ahead on its branding and as such had a huge identity, always popular and easily recognisable.

C3NE = quick stab at ITV1. Utter rubbish. Yorkshire somehow escaped it, but its similar "Channel 3" branding was equally as ugly.

I wasn't too fussed on HTV's 1995 attempt; much preferred the 1993 one. All in all, the generic look of 1999 started off OK, but it just deterioated over time, as seen by the overload and poor editing of GMG's idents of the time.

Well considering it was in an era of generic branding, I thought that was quite nice.

It wasn't too bad I guess, but THAT awful 3, I can remember when it reverted back to Tyne Tees, Mike Neville turned to Bob the weatherman and said how nice it was say that name again...

If you'd had that, with IVC and without the conflicting ITV branding alongside, in 2000 it would have been the best look the station had had in years.

Pity it was underused.

The worst ITV regional idents ever have to be the Anglia silly English knnnn-ights! and UTV's star-prize-going-round-on-a-stick. I'm pretty sure that was what was responsible for the death of the zigzag symbol.

I'm probably going to be snided at for saying this, but I actually liked Carlon's (sorry, Carl t on's, with a bl**dy T) logo. It was very simple, but it was quite a clever underlying concept - that the T would disappear to allow the logo to morph to "LONDON". When the star was introduced, I thought the the T nested in the L made the logo a lot more symbiotic.

Shame about the programmes though. And I agree that the Carlton/Central ident was hideous.

It's the music that's good.
