BTW, the German TV stations on analogue satellite were mostly showing news. RTL and RTL II showed the same programme. ARD and WDR shared too I think.

New York Continues To Burn

Despite the thick smoke still billowing above the Manhattan skyline and 'apocalyptic' scenes on the ground emergency services say they have located and are talking to a group of seven survivors trapped under the rubble.

There are also reports a fireman has survived after tumbling down 83 floors as one of the towers collapsed.

Rescue workers have been digging through the remains of the two giant towers since they collapsed yesterday afternoon.

Stunned

A stunned America has begun its search for the people who carried out the attack on US soil.

Five Arab suspects on board the hijacked flights have been identified - one a pilot, who would have known how to take control of the planes and turn them into suicide bombs.

It could be weeks before the extent of the world's worst terrorist act is known. It's possible the numbers are so high, nobody ever will.

Missing

Miraculously five firefighters, and three policemen who were buried alive when the first tower crumbled have been pulled out and are being treated in hospital. Scores of their colleagues and other emergency workers are still missing.

Manhattan's affluent downtown area bears no resemblance to its former self.

Where financial whizz kids and brokers once hurried about their business of making money, firefighters and ambulances are now struggling about theirs - the business of saving lives.

In lower Manhattan around 3,000 people have been treated, and only a few bodies have been found - a worryingly small number given the likely number of dead.

Expecting the worst

'I think so many people are dead,' said a hospital spokesman. 'It's a bad sign that there are no mass casualties.'

But some have survived.

Emergency services say they have had calls from people trapped in the rubble, using their mobile phones to let people know they are still alive.

Disbelief has turned to anger. Americans, and the world, want to know why and who carried out the attacks, not only to understand but also to retaliate.

Retribution

George W Bush has promised revenge will follow. In a national televised address he told a shocked America: 'We will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harboured them.

US Defence Secretary Colin Powell said when they find out who did it the US 'will respond as if it's a war. It will be a long term conflict fought on many fronts.'

Prime Suspect is Osama bin Laden, America's most wanted, and most reviled enemy. At least one person on the flight is thought to have been a bin Laden supporter.

Deadly weapon

The FBI has been studying the passenger lists for Arabic names. Of the five they have identified two were brothers - one a trained pilot who would have known how to take control of an aircraft and fly it into the most potent symbol of American might.

In Washington DC rescue workers have been picking through the rubble of another American icon. The third hijacked plane smashed into the home of American defence - there too the authorities have no idea how many may have died.

BBC Two was as normal until it broke away from the TUC Conference at 3.30 to show CBBC and Neighbours until 6.

ITV1 went to ITV News after the first half of Crossroads at 2.15pm.

CITV, The People Versus and Semi-repeat of Crossroads were all apprantly moved to ITV2.
Expect Crossroads to be repeated tommorow on ITV1
Yes, it was. People Versus, and possibly Cardcaptors and ZZZAP! might be too, but not today - cancelled again. Expect Crossroads on Friday now. This Morning finished at noon. Was Watch To Win on?

Crossroads had the scheduled episode today (not yesterdays) with a brief recap beforehand.

Truely amazing pictures from what has been an awful event. I'd never thought that I'd live to see Concorder crash and the Pentagon destroyed. I must say that though personally that the BBC won hands down. They played the point about it being Middle East extremists very carefully while ITV jumped onto it accusing people left right and centre which was a bit foolish. Although the BBC have the Breaking News aston that everyone loves (!), least you could see the pictures properly in split screen. ITV's split screens are too thin to show the action so most of it was cut off.

Yesterday Carlton Central showed the Blue heart ident thats mostly used for introducing the news for the majority of the day. However they also used the Sunrise ident in the early evening - the first time I've ever seen it here in the Central region.

At the end of the day it wasn't the reporters or guests that made yesterdays news - the pictures spoke a thousand words for themselves.

A sad day indeed. Hopefully we will not see this again.

Another amazing thing about the coverage of this tragedy, is how the first plane collision was captured. No-one knew this was going to happen, yet somehow, the first collision was covered and now archived.

In today's multi-media world, it still amazes me how we can get these pictures of major events.

Another day of harrowing pictures. Changes to TV schedules.

Huw Edwards was on a Newsround special.

The 6 is 1 hour long tonight, and the BBC ONE scheduling has been changed. There are news bulletins throughout the evening.

Another sad,sad day.

What did your ITV Region show immediately before 6pm tonight?

On YTV, a Menu was shown, but was voiced by our local announcer

The earlier menus at 2.30 and 5.30 were both voiced by the Carlton loud voices.
