Sorry if I've missed this, but who's going to be the host broadcaster? Will it be one of the German TV stations, or Eurovision/EBU?

ITV have announced their squad for the World Cup today. Key bits below from MediaGuardian :

ITV Sport has signed up failed England manager candidates Sam Allardyce and Alan Curbishley, along with Christian O'Connell, for its World Cup coverage next month. Allardyce, Curbishley and Manchester City's Stuart Pearce will form part of ITV's commentating team for the tournament in Germany, which runs from June 9 to July 9.

Virgin Radio breakfast host O'Connell will present the ITV4 World Cup spin-off show, World Cuppa, taking a light-hearted look at the event.

World Cuppa will be a one-hour show broadcast on ITV4 at 10pm throughout the tournament.

ITV is taking its World Cup coverage from Germany on the road, hosting live coverage from the venues around the country, while the BBC is expected to base its operation in Berlin.

In addition to ITV Sport presenters Steve Rider, Jim Rosenthal and Gabby Logan, the broadcaster's Germany 2006 team will feature regular football commentators Clive Tyldesley, Peter Drury and Jon Champion, and pundits Ally McCoist, Andy Townsend, Robbie Earle, Terry Venables and David Pleat.

ITV has also hired Ruud Gullit, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Jay-Jay Okocha, Gareth Southgate and Jim Beglin for the World Cup.

Matt Smith will host a regular highlights programme, while Gabriel Clark is to report from the England base in Baden Baden and Ned Boulting will be on the road filing stories from other World Cup locations around Germany.

ITV Sport will have a new onscreen look for the World Cup, as well as promos for its tournament coverage being directed by Daryl Goodrich, whose credits include the award-winning Pride film for London's 2012 Olympic bid.

The broadcaster has also commissioned its own World Cup theme song, a version of David Bowie's Heroes to be performed by Kasabian.

Big Sam and Jay-Jay

Great - I'll be watching ITV for a change (except for England matches when BBC rules the waves!!!!! - I'll tape ITV if Big Sam and Jay Jay are at those matches)

Besides a maximum of 2 matches you have to watch both channels as the matches are only on one or the other!

Steve Riders involvement in the tournament for ITV this year is interesting, according to BBC News, he'll be fronting ITV's two England games. Isn't this a demotion for Gabby ?

Steve never really did football at the BBC did he ?

Believe the only football Steve did at the Beeb was that featured on Sportsnight.

Has to be seen as a demotion for Gabby.

He did Football Focus when Bob Wilson left. Gary Lineker used to sit alongside him before taking over after a while. Steve Rider also did some international games when they were on Grandstand, before the BBC decided its gradual demolition of the Grandstand brand in favour of MOTD. Plus Sportsnight of course, and some football when he was at ITV first time around.

Wow. Shocked What a massive kick-in-the-teeth for Gabby Logan. And for Jim Rosenthal - now third-rank football anchor. I bet he's regretting giving up F1. Looks like Rider is becoming the 'new face of ITV Sport'.

AFAIK Steve is pretty knowledgeable about football - a devout Charlton Athletic fan. I doubt, however, that he will be able to sway viewers away from the Beeb if/when England matches are live on both channels. Des never managed it, I doubt Steve will either.

Sorry to ask something hat's already been mentioned probably, but it's hard work trailing through a long thread. Laughing

Who is airing the two semis and the final?

Both are airing the final; if England reach the semis (unlikely) then both will air that and I believe ITV will show the other one, otherwise I think ITV get first pick.
