They may not have qualified for the World Cup finals but I'd remind you that it's not that long since Northern Ireland beat England 1-0.

Yes, I saw that game, well done. But what's that got to do with the complaints about the media being pro-England when they're the only home nations in the tournament ? Should they be dropping that result in to conversation every now and again to make the Irish feel better ?

I don't have a problem with the UK media being pro-England as they are the only home nation in the tournament. I do however have a problem with the level of hype beforehand, and the level of self-pity in the aftermath.

Widening it out a little, when the BBC covered the England v Ireland Six Nations match the commentary was so pro-England it was unbelievable, and resulted in many complaints (externally and internally). I've previously been a critic of sending a BBC NI team to provide a separate commentary for something network sport are covering, but now think it's money well spent.

Thankfully on the occasion of the NI v England match in Belfast BBC NI provided full match coverage locally - which was a good thing as if the network post-match analysis with Ian Wright had gone out on BBC ONE NI there'd have been a mass burning of TV Licences on the streets of NI.

Re: 6 nations

Each nation's commentary is biased. You should hear the BBC Scotland version of commentary for Scotland matches (especially v. England).

The fact the Eng v Ire commentary for the BBC was biased is because Ireland is NOT PART OF THE UNION. How Irish people could feel justified in complaining about the BBC (which they receive without paying a full license fee) is beyond me.

Scotland's First Minister got many backs up because of his ill-considered anti-English team comments.

I'm sure he was trying to humourously connect with that deep-seeded Scottish chip-on-the-shoulder which runs through our society, but instead it only served to outrage Englishmen and Daily Mail writers.

Actually Jack McConnell's comments led to at least 2 English companies pulling out of events in Scotland, one of which would have formed a significant part of an Edinburgh festival.

His comments were outrageously inappropriate for a politician, and sadly shows the level of competance of former parish officials that fill the seats at the Scottish parliament.

Jack McConnell has cost the Scottish economy millions of pounds of investment because of his, as you said, "humerous" comments. Anywhere else, and this would be a resigning matter.

Combined with the racist attacks on English people in several areas of Scotland, I think the Scottish people have a great deal of soul-searching to do....to get to the heart of why such a significant proportion (from street lout to First Minister) are so anti-English.

Well because as far as the six nations [and rugby generally] is concerned, it is a whole Ireland team -- inclusive of NI.

Now you're just being silly. As has already been pointed out, in rugby there is one Ireland team which has players from both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The people of Northern Ireland pay a licence fee, as you are well aware.

Out of interest, marksi, why is that?

I'm not familiar with the history behind it.

I'm not saying ITV shouldn't have had the two group games, I'm just saying that usually, once the group stage is over broadcasts would alternate.

The Irish Rugby team was formed before partition.

Well, what's "usually"? In 86 and 90 all the knockout games were simulcast (only because the BBC reneged on an agreement, but they were simulcast nonetheless). We'll gloss over 94 for obvious reasons. In 98 the knockout games were to alternate - ITV got the second round tie and the BBC would have had the qtr final. Result being that ITV got 26m and the BBC got zippo and very fed up. Outcome is that the BBC won't go for a 98 like split again. In 2002 you'll remember the knockout games were simulcast, and ITV got one of the three group games (albeit the one with the most attractive KO time).

So at the last WC ITV ended up with something like 35% of the total viewing audience for England games across the tournament. This time they've ended up with about 43% - a much better result. The only way they achieved that was by giving the BBC the two knockout games to themselves. Both broadcasters know that the BBC will have a bigger share on head to heads; the BBC use this to secure the better of the deal, but they can't screw too much in case the partnership breaks down. That would mean an expensive bidding war for the BBC in future, and if they won the bidding they'd have a potential scheduling problem and lots of complainst from people who don't like football.
