It is only tonight it isn't on, due to a special programme about a Bush speech on U.S. Space Policy (about going to Mars).
The World is on as normal on BBC Four.

So I watched BBC World for 'The World' at 08:00 GMT. But... It seems they're broadcasting a joint bulletin with News 24 instead! What's happening?

Well - it's very interesting watching this simulcast with 24 (generic branding etc). It's IMMEDIATELY obvious that 24 is very much inferior. Only one news story to talk about? You'd think so!
The headlines lack any pace because there are no timing points - so it doesn't look very on the ball. There's about a one second pause between every item so it just sounds very sloppy in comparison to World.
Then Jon Sopel (as presenter 2) looking back at that terribly washed out screen while he mentioned crossing to correspondent Katty Kay..but she wasn't there.. so he was looking at the logo!
Then.. it cut to her - and she was on camera for 8 seconds.. saying nothing. Presumably that was meant to appear on the screen while he was referring to her. So if she's there looking at the camera.. why couldn't she say that bit herself? Finally the titles.
It looks REALLY bad and reminded me of watching it during my trip to the UK between Xmas & New Year where, seemingly, every time I watched 24 something would go wrong.
There seems to be no logic in having a second presenter in the opening sequence if he has nothing to say apart from to refer to a correspondent who is standing there anyway!
The average World bulletin is slick, professional - and the anchor generally comes across as a great journalist. News 24 looks amateur in comparison.
Sorry to sound negative but I think it's surprisingly poor and that is highlighted by those promises of something better in December.

This has been discussed in the Newsreader thread, but I'll summarise here - News 24 is doing a special programme for both channels on President Bush's space exploration ideas - N9 is still producing "The World" but this is only going out on BBC Four tonight.

As I've just said, the reason there's only one story is because it's a special about space exploration!! It's been billed all day long on both World and 24.

I think News 24 is very polished these days, although of course technical problems are bound to occur more often on a channel of this type than on a non-reactive channel. Maybe you've just happened to tune in at the times when things haven't been going according to plan.

itsrobert - point taken.. although I had just tuned in and didn't notice any mention of it being a special programme at the top. Neither did the titles (when they finally kicked in!) say it was a special.
Dan - I'm afraid to me it just seems like they're falling over themselves at times. Plus it does seem that the second presenter standing in front of the screen is there for sake of it at times. These should surely be used as "tools" when relevant.
This programme itself had several technical mistakes and several fluffed lines right at the start. It's really not as good as the average BBC World special - they should have produced it (if they weren't busy doing a programme for BBC Four at the time!!)

Well it was worthwhile cancelling it. Despite the fact the presentation was awful, I didnt really know it was a special to be honest apart from the odd "here on the BBC".
