This week ITV1 has been showing the series "Wish You Were Here... Now And Then" weekday afternoons 4:30pm to 5pm.
I haven't actually watched any of them, I've just spotted it looking through this week's TV Choice.
How many of you remember the ITV travel programme "Wish You Were Here"? Here are my fond memories.
I first saw Wish You Were Here in the late 1970s. It began with the Thames Skyline ident, whose jingle went:
Gowng gowng geeng-er horng ut a norng
The first ever opening sequence for it that I can remember a number of scenes, one of which was kids jumping on a bouncy castle. At the time I was only about 6 or 7, and seeing that bit reminded me of when I went on the bouncy castle on family day trips to Weymouth the previous summer.
It was presented by Judith Chalmers, and some bloke (Chris Kelly if I remember rightly, please correct me if I'm wrong).
In the early 1980s, Laker collapsed, and Wish You Were Here talked about that in the first programme following the collapse.
January 1986, and the opening sequence had changed a bit since the late 1970s. The signature tune had also changed to the second one that I know of. By now the opening sequence included a cartoony animation of a suitcase being closed, put on a plane and jetting off.
In February 1993, I saw it again. By then the maker's frontcap was no longer used, you just got the local ITV provider's ident. Since I was watching in the Meridian region, I saw the Meridian sun and moon ident. Furthermore by then Thames had lost the London weekday franchise to Carlton, so Thames were now an independent producer. The next bit was the Barclaycard sponsorship trailer before the opening sequence, by now they were on with the third signature tune that I know of. By then Judith Chalmers had aged somewhat since the late 1970s / early 1980s.
I recently saw Judith Chalmers on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, by jove hasn't she aged even more since 1993.
